I ran the movie and .srt file through ffmpegx to try to prepare it for burning in Toast 8 Mac. I got an mpg that plays just fine in VLC with selectable subtitle track, and also a VIDEO_TS folder version. That will burn and have selectable subtitles, but the video plays with a halt every few seconds.

If I try just dropping the mpg into toast and setting it to 'reencode never' the video plays fine on the DVD, but there are no subtitles. Well, in the version with a menu screen there was a choice of subtitles (although there were no subs for the menu, of course), but not in the movie itself.

Any ideas on how I can get this onto the DVD??? (BTW I'm trying these out from disc images in the Mac DVD player, which usually will play things that my standalone DVD player will not.)

That would happen if the video is of NTSC Film (23.976 fps) framerate and you didn't apply a "3:2 pulldown".
When using the ffmpegX preset 'DVD mpeg2enc', there is a "Set 3:2" checkbox in the Options tab, to set a 3:2 pulldown. No more stutter.
