First try cleaning the disc, detergent, rinse, pat dry.

    Try Isopuzzle.

If it fails on some sectors and you can see scratches, I've had success rubbing them down with Brasso. This is an abrasive, it will take the shine off, but should still be readable.

Brasso is an abrasive that will likely make the disc worse than it already is. Search the forum for a big conversation on this topic a while back.

Yeah, if by "big conversation" you mean you being an obnoxious insulting jerk, over and over.

I SAID it is an abrasive. FFS. That's how it works.

Have you actually dirtied your hands to experiment? I did. I made measurements of readability before and after.
Last one I tried went from 94% to 100% recoverable data after a few minutes polishing.
    It works.

When you give people advice, it's generally expected that you tell them of the dangers of using a method, if any exist. The only "jerk" here is the person that doesn't seem to care if his advice further damages the disc.

    - Brasso is basically liquid sandpaper.
    - Your human hand motions are too chaotic to give a smooth buff.
    - The odds are NOT in your favor. Screwing up the disc is more likely.

Lots of other people had to learn this the hard way already:

If you really want to to fix a disc, take it to a place that re-buffs a disc with a professional machine.

If you don't actually care about the disc, sure, attack it with Brasso.

It's worked for me several times so far.
Disk that were unreadable are now readable.

So, as far as I know, the "dangers" exist only in your mind.

So again, have you actually tried it? Or are your opinions based on divine revelation?

Yes. Try reading the links. Mostly people trying to buff their iPod screens.
I'm sure there are lots of things that Brasso "does not work" for.
I wouldn't advise you to polish your teeth with it.

After a few pages I found one that actually did refer to discs.

    http://www.ehow.com/how_2001533_remove-scratches-cds-dvds.html
    Step One
Wrap the rag around your index finger and apply a small amount of brasso to the rag
    Step Two
Polish the scratched area in a circular motion applying a small to medium amount of pressure
    Step Three
Using a clean part of the rag, wipe off all traces of the brasso polishing compound
    Step Four
Try playing the CD or DVD disc in its appropriate player

    Overall Tips & Warnings
Typically the scratch does not have to be entirely erased for the disc to be returned to playable condition
Patience is key, polish for a minute or two and try to play the disc. If it still does not work, repeat the steps.
Brasso is a very fine polishing compound, if you apply too much pressure you may add scratches to the disc instead of removing them
Well, was that "the hard way"?

The main thing is that you should give a warning with your advice. Have we so long forgotten the lesson of "Format c:/"?*

Saying "it's an abrasive" is not the same as "this is like sandpaper. Use wih extreme caution!"

*Do not try this! (even though it will do nothing).

Do you want me to create a new thread for you guys, where you can discuss "Is Brasso the answer to the scratched disk problem?"

    Because it's NOT like sandpaper.

I hate to be repetitious, but have you actually tried it?
If not, what are you basing your remarks on?

If I needed that I could just hit my head with a hammer by myself.
