I have many mp3 folders and what is happening is that mp3 files are leaving folders and forming there own folder. In other words a folder of 20 mp3's is becoming one folder of 18 mp3's and two folders of one mp3 each. I use XPSP2 and keep my HD's defragged and virus free. This is happening on all of my drives, internal as well as external. This only happens to mp3s and no other kind of file. It only happens to certain folders and not to others(but always the same one's). This is ruining my music collection as I have hundreds of folders with thousands of mp3s and cannot figure out which folder the strays came from. I have been using Windows for 10 years and have never seen this before. I use Zone Alarm security suite and run Ad-Aware, A-Squared, Spybot S&D, Ccleaner and AVG regularly. This is weird and any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Have you recently defragged your drives with Norton? If so, that could be the reason. A few years back, I used Norton to defrag my external drive that contained only MP3. My entire MP3 collection was ruined. The files did not form their own folders, THEY WERE MIXED TOGETHER.

For example, I would open one MP3 with singer A. A portion of this MP3 was replaced with another MP3 with singer B.

If your files only migrated to a different folder, consider yourself lucky. You still have them. For me, I had to re-transfer my entire collection from tapes/records.

After that experience, I burnt all my MP3 onto DVD discs. No more soft storage.

Added note: I still keep my MP3 files in a hard drive, but only for listening purpose. I have been defragging my drive regulalrly because I don't worry about what may happen to them. I safeguard my MP3 files by burning them onto DVD discs.

What do you use to play your Mp3s? Do you have it auto fill data or organize your music? Some programs like Itunes will do this.

  4. I have seen some programs auto-arrange mp3s according to the file info...The artist, album etc that is encoded with the track.
