    hello,
my monitor has these black marks on it, i don't think they are dirt marks as i have tried to clean the monitor yet they stay. when i do try to wipe them with a cloth they disappear for a few seconds and then gradually reappear.

the marks are only noticeable on a white background.
    its a flat lcd monitor
is there a way to get rid of these marks any help would be much appreciated.
    thank you.

Always black or sometimes another color? If black, yes probably dead - if not you might be able to fix it.

  4. I have similar marks on the screen of my 2 year old HP laptop. In my case the marks aren't dead pixels. They look more like dirty smudges. The marks aren't on the surface and can't be cleaned with any sort of screen cleaning solution.

I never touch the screen of my laptop, so they are not dirt. The spots have been increasing in quantity over the last year or so. I just figured that it was some sort of manufacturing defect. The warranty is long gone and the marks are only visible when the screen is bright.

Is this what you are seeing zinc?

  6. I have some darker smudges on an old refurbished A G Neovo 17" lcd display. My marks look more like shadows as you can see the image through them. I always assumed it was something to do with the backlight.

Sounds to me like it may be a dead / dying pixel.

Some of you are describing Image Persistence, the semi-equivilant to screen burn-in for LCD monitors as opposed to CRT type. My monitor does it some as well. Turning it off for awhile helps. There is more info and a free screensaver-ish type app at jscreenfix.com that supposedly corrects some of that.

    Cheers,
    Rick

I have a couple of used LCDs with the same type of 'marks'. They're a defect in the screen. Mine were caused by someone placing a object against the screen at some time, probably while it was in storage. The surface is 'warped' slightly. You only notice it with a white or light background. And there's nothing you can do about it.

A sure sign is when you lightly wipe the screen and they momentarily disappear.

  9. The problem is not a single dead/dying pixel. I have 5 or 6 areas of my screen that exibit this problem. Each area is an irregular shape and would easily be 50 to 100 pixels in size - far to big to be a bad pixel.

I think redwudz is correct in that something is pressing against the screen. In the case of my laptop I suspect that it is something pressing from the back, when the lid is closed. As I said, I never touch the screen. However, the laptop does go into a bag and goes home with me every night and to client sites most days. I suspect that cables, CD cases, etc in the next pocket are pressing against the backside of the screen (top of the laptop). There is a fairly thick divider between the two sections, but the laptop bag does get moved around quite a bit.

I don't know what else to do. Extra padding would make the bag very thick. I think some types of screens are just very sensitive to pressure.

I suspect you're correct. In order to make laptops as thin as possible, they probably make the back of the screen (The top of the laptop) of light material. I've seen some posts about people leaving books on a laptop and damaging the screen. My laptop case is padded, but I also have an older HP laptop that's definately not thin.

If the contents of your bag caused the damage, that's a good warning to others. Sorry about your laptop, though.
