ive filmed small videos for projects, and I dont know which format of codec eg.avi, mpeg and wmv gives the best compression with the similar quality? It doesnt have to be full HD quality but at least average VCD to SVCD quality for sampling.

BTW,I have 6 clips which average is about 230mb each and need to make them fit into my 1g pen drive.

    any suggestions? thx

For high compression I'd suggest Divx or WMV, WMV will be more compatible if you need to distribute them. Each are pretty close in quality.

The file size is determined by the bitrate and the time length of video. you can get a rough idea of what bitrate using the calculator here: https://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm

Switch it to advanced mode and use a custom "DVD" size of 1 gig.

There's also an option in WME for creating files based on size.

sorry, i am new to this,

do u mean the same bitrate of any codec would give the same quality and size?

what about other codecs such as MPEG, RM, or MP4?

No. That is made for MPEG-2 for DVD-Video.
All compressions/codecs compress at different rates, filesizes vary.

To elaborate a little, If you had a 720x480 MPEG2 at 8000kbps to get about the same quality with a 720x480 DIVX or WMV it could be about 1500 to 2000 kbps.

I only mentioned the calculator to get a rough idea for what bitrate you need. For example if you set it as custom input of a 1GB "DVD" (in this case its really your pen drive). Add up the length of time of all your clips and input that, adjust the audio bitrate accordingly, you'll get a rough estimate of what bitrate you need for WMV or Divx.

In other words you got X amount of space on the pen drive, you input the time length an it will give you the bitrate the videos need to be to fit into that space.

I just gave the mp4 files to my friend, he converted them into Real Media, the files came out quite good !!! I will ask him to convert them to Divx now.
