Forgive me if I am asking a question that has been asked several times, but I searched the forums and could not find this particular question.

So here it is: I was wondering if there is a program that can convert from DVD at AVI with a certain output file size specified. It does not have to be freeware. I am just curious what is out there.

    Thank you for any help!

You might have a closer look at AutoGK.

If you use a bitrate calculator and determine the required bitrate for the target size, then all of them will do it. Size = bitrate x running time. Universal rule.

However if you want quality done easy, AutoGK is hard to go past.

    Thanks guys!

I will look for a bitrate calculator - or just perform the simple math.

I did actually try AutoGK once before. Now I do remember the quality being nice, but the process took quite a long time . I know this shouldn't matter, but it was enough for me to try something else.

I have been using WinAVI shortly. The process is reasonably quick, but I haven't been sold on the quality.

Maybe I will hafta give it another go if nothing else is out there. I already have VirtualDub and Avisynth on my computer anyway.

    Any other ideas?

vcalc (Video Calculator) is a nice, stand-alone bitrate calculator

You might look at AlltoAVI or WinFF as alternatives. AutoGK uses the official Xvid or Divx codecs, whereas WinFF uses ffmeg's implementation of Xvid, which is possibly faster. Ultimately, the only way to make large speed improvements is to get a faster computer. Yours is starting to get a little long in the tooth.
