  1. Hi,

So I just added a Samsung SH-S203N (SATA) drive to my box... It reads & rips fine, but every time I tried to burn a ISO file to a DVD, with DVD Decrypter (3.5.4, older free version), the drive just stops responding. The speed and write rate drop to zero, and the process status bar just stays where it's currently at. The program does not lock up and allows you to access it, but the burner just keeps spinning and spinning and spinning.... Even after closing DVD Decrypter.

After several tries I decided to send it back thinking it was defective. I got a new one and guess what? Well, I then checked the firmware and it already has the lastest version (SB01). Then a relative told me that DVD Decrypter might be "too old" for this new burner and to try NERO, which came only with the 2nd burner (go figure)... Nero burned about 5 DVDs with no problems, some even less than 5 min!

So I thought for sure my problem was solved, until I tried to play one. It played but was pretty glitchy... So, hoping that the maybe the ISO file was corrupt or something, I tried to burn a different ISO file to DVD with Nero and it F'n froze at 81%, just as it did with DVD Decrypter initially! Again, Nero didn't freeze, but the burner just stopped responding and the process bar stuck at 81% for 10 min, until I finally aborted!

PLEASE send any suggestions or thoughts b/c I am SO FRUSTRATED - I've never had a problem with burners! Always used NEC and have burned at least 250 DVDs, litterally... Not sure if this matters but, my system still has a NEC burner in it, but it's IDE connection... I just added this new SATA burner and it recognized it fine and set it to drive "H", after the NEC burner which is drive "F" ("G" is for a card reader in my printer).

    Thanks so much in advance!!!

P.S. Not sure if it helps but here's the Nero burn log when it failed, even though it never actually gave me an error message before I aborted... 1 thing I noticed is that it has "IDE" listed as the adapter type for the Samsung SATA drive????

try to get some better media. the Moser Baer India Limited isn't great and may not work in your drive. verbatim -r might give you an idea if the drive is going to work ok.

also imgburn is the successor to decrypter and you might want to try using it.

  3. Thanks for the reply!

The media is Memorex 16X DVD+R, and I buy them by the hundreds and have only experienced maybe 2 or so coasters in about 250 burns with my NEC burner... I guess you could be write but I'd hate to change media just b/c of samsung being picky... Thing is, I didn't buy another NEC b/c I heard their quality has dropped... Boy, I hope all new burners aren't this picky and unreliable

1wheelken: What brand is your motherboard? Because some sata controller chipsets don't work correctly with SATA DVD Burners. Motherboards with the Intel ICH8/9 sata controllers work fine with SATA DVD Burners & NVIDIA sata controllers will work fine as long as you use the latest drivers. VIA chipset controllers won't work so you'll have to buy a SATA PCI CONTROLLER card w/the SILICON IMAGE 3112/3114 chipset for a SATA DVD Burners. Older motherboards w/SATA connections will have compatibility issues because they weren't equipped to be used for SATA DVD burners. Also check your motherboard BIOS to see if RAID is enabled, if it is then disable it.

The dvd media you're using is considered crappy. Use VERBATIM or TAIYO YUDEN dvd media. Burn dvd media with IMGBURN because DVD DECRYPTER is no longer updated. Both of those programs were made by the same guy named, LightningUK. NERO BURN is buggy as hell and not reliable as IMGBURN when it comes to burning dvd media.

  6. Thanks again for the reply!

My MOBO: Intel BOXDG965WHMKR LGA 775 Intel G965 Express ATX (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813121052)

Since the last time it stopped responding, I was able to burn about 5 DVDs with NERO, however when I play them back on my home dvd player, they all skip a little way into each movie...

Then I tried to burn one at 8X... Less skips/glitches, but problems still there...

Next, I tried a verbatim 16X DVD+R (lightscribe) disc at MAX speed, and it caused the burner to stop responding as it has done before, only this time it froze my entire system! I couldn't even get into the task manager!! Man, this just keeps getting worse!!!!

2 things came to mind since my post... I thought maybe my home dvd player sucks so I put in a older dvd I burned with my NEC player about yr ago... It worked fine!

The other thing I thougt is that maybe it's some type of system problem... maybe lack of HD space for swap files? I have 2 320GB drives that I store ISO files on to burn... One has 10.8GB free and the other has 15.8GB free...Seems like enough free space but maybe not? The reason I thought this b/c my NEC just recently started to burn discs with glitches in them - I just thought it was finally goin bad so that why I bought the samsung... But now the samsung is "kinda" doin the same thing (when it actually completes a burn), so I don't know what to think!!!!! ERRRRRRRRRR! I never imagined this much trouble!!!

I'm starting to also wonder if the samsung just isn't all it's cracked up to be???

I'll try imgburn and see what happens with that... Thanks again!

Don't be burning VERBATIM or any other dvd media at the MAX SPEED. Just because you have a 20x speed dvd burner doesn't mean you'll be successful with the disc playing back correctly. The best you can burn is at 12x speed or if you use MEDIA CODE SPEED EDIT to swap write strategies with other media id. As I mentioned you're using crappy ass MEMOREX dvd media. Stick to the VERBATIM dvd media and you won't have any problems as long as you burn them at 12x. In my experience I've burned 16x speed with VERBATIM & TAIYO YUDEN with my SAMSUNG SATA S203B drives but I use MEDIA CODE SPEED EDIT to change the write strategies for certain media id's.

Your motherboard should be fine but make sure RAID is disabled in your motherboard BIOS. This could also cause problems with dvd burning. Also make sure your SATA SAMSUNG Dvd burner is connected to the SATA port that has the INTEL ICH8 SATA controller. Your motherboard also has 3 additional SATA ports that are for RAID, which the dvd burner will not work correctly so if it's connected to it right now remove it and use the SATA connection that has ICH8.

I don't believe your hard drives could be the reason for your problems. Make sure when you're burning dvd discs that antivirus and any other programs running in the background are disabled. Don't even surf the net as well. SAMSUNG SATA DVD Burners are the best in the market at this time.

Hello, I came across this thread after searching for answers on the exact same problem. I too have the SH-S203N, which will freeze at various points during a burn. I've been using Verbatim DVD+R media along with DVDFab 3.2.1.0, DVDFab 4.0.3.2, DVD Decryptor, DVD Shrink 3.2, and Nero 6 & 7.... all with the same problem. At first I thought this was a hardware defect, but now I think it's something to do with the SATA connection. I just switched from using an IDE (Samsung as well) DVD-RW to this new SATA.

Any advice on the problem would be great. The optical drive is connected to a Gigabyte P35-DS3P. I've tried the JMicron SATA port as well as the Gigabyte SATA on the board and come to the same problem with both. Currently AHCI is switched off, which I think could be the problem, but enabling it causes Windows to not load.

    Thanks again

Don't use the JMicron SATA port. Connect the drive to the SATA port that uses the INTEL SATA chipset controller. I see your GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3P motherboard has RAID SATA controllers as well which could make a SATA dvd burner not work correctly. Also disable RAID in the mobo BIOS as well. I believe the SATA ports on the GIGABYTE mobo's are different colors. On one of my GIGABYTE P35 mobos the PURPLE port is for RAID connections and the ORANGE port is where my SAMSUNG S230B drives are connected to which means they're using the INTEL chipset controllers. Also leave ACHI disabled as well. If you don't understand about the ACHI read your GIGABYTE manual.

Use IMGBURN to burn your dvd media. IMHO any other burning software is crappy. Good Luck!

As nicely explained by budz, the sata controller is the biggest factor in this case.
Its more frickin than you might think, because there are many controllers onboard sold these days which are just useless for SATA ODD. They only work well for SATA HDD, not to mention RAID..........

If there is an option in the BIOS to set the controller to IDE or enhanced IDE, try that. RAID is a no-go with ODD.
There is also the possibility for some sata controllers to flash them with a BASE BIOS which has RAID disabled, they should work.

  11. Thanks again for the suggestions!

I have since been able to burn several DVDs with IMGBURN, but it seems that every 5 or so I have a burn that freezes half way, just as mentioned in my original problem... The completed burns actually play pretty well in one of my home DVD players, with only a few glitches... However, each one consistently skips near the beginning-middle of the movie in a different player I have at home... I'll admit this is the "pickier" of the 2 players, but then again it plays older DVDs I have burned just fine!

OK, now getting to your suggestions...

    budz
Also make sure your SATA SAMSUNG Dvd burner is connected to the SATA port that has the INTEL ICH8 SATA controller. Your motherboard also has 3 additional SATA ports that are for RAID, which the dvd burner will not work correctly so if it's connected to it right now remove it and use the SATA connection that has ICH8.
Well, I looked at my MOBO, the manual, and on Itel's site and I did find where they mentioned that ODD should plug into "Black" ICH8 SATA ports rather than "Orange" Raid ones, however all of mine appear to be black

I have 1 HD in SATA0, and 1 HD in SATA1... Originally I had the new burner plugged into the SATA3 port, but then changed it to the SATA2 port. I haven't really noticed a difference since then...

    [_chef_]
If there is an option in the BIOS to set the controller to IDE or enhanced IDE, try that. RAID is a no-go with ODD.
I have not tried this yet b/c I took a look and wasn't sure about something... In the bios it did have the SATA ports set to RAID. The only other options were "IDE", and "ACHI", but the last will only work for VISTA... I was concerned about switching this for 2 reasons... First, when I selected the IDE controller option, it cleared the list of SATA devices connected ( 2 HDs & 1 burner), as if nothing was there/connected??? 2nd, if I would select the IDE option, would it therefore slow the performance of my HDs, since they are both SATA 3Gb/s?

Well, I really do appreciate all the help (and patience for my lack of knowledge)! I don't want to sound stubborn and I'm sure you gentlemen know a lot more about this than me but I just really hate to take a step "backward" in performance... If you know what I mean. See, I have been burning 4.7GB ISOs to Memorex DVDs with my 16X NEC burner, while surfing the net, printing labels for work, running AV, excel docs, etc, yet all those DVDs burned in about 6-7 mins with NO problems!

Maybe I have just been really lucky in the past, but I'd really just like to get at least that kind of performance back. In other words, I'm trying to avoid buying all new DVDs (at least for now), burning slower, and waiting twice as long... Thanks guyZ

This piece of your Nero log seems to show DMA is off on the burner.

If you are burning without DMA it is quite easy to believe that when you reach higher transfer rates (outer areas of the DVD) the burn will crap out. Nero only uses a single core so you effectively have a slow system (2ghz), and no DMA. If any other program is using the same core the results will be even worse.

Fix the DMA problem by uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers. It seems to me that the fact that your burner is SATA is probably a red herring. DMA off is a classic and common problem which is normally easy to diagnose.

It also seems that your second Barrracuda is also running with DMA off. If you are burning from that drive your configuration is a disaster.

After you remedy this - learn to read the Nero log, its worth the effort.

In my experience Nero 7 issues a warning when DMA is off. Are you ignoring it?

You are using MEMOREX dvd media which is considered crappy media. Use VERBATIM and TAIYO YUDEN and you'll see your problems disappear.

The SATA connection for your drive should be set in the BIOS to ide. ACHI should be disabled in your BIOS. The speed of your HD's should not be affected. I'll have to read this thread over as I'm at work right now on lunch hour.

Sorry Budz - this problem will exist with any media. The system is misconfigured,

Then assist the OP in getting his sytem configured to how it is suppose to be!!!!! :P
If you've got nothing constructive to contribute to this thread then refrain from making comments. I have 4 SATA DVD Burners which were all installed on different brands of motherboards with different chipset controller so I think I have a good idea on how to assist the OP.

  16. Wow! I should have noticed that!

Nero did not show me any DMA warnings, and when the drive does work it's pretty fast so that's weird.... I have seen the DMA OFF warnings in the past when using DVDFab, and the speed difference was very noticable.

I'm honestly not sure how to get them into DMA mode I've done it thru the device manager b4, but now when I go under the "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" section, it doesn't even show SATAs.... It shows the primary IDE and the secondary IDE... 1 device is in ultra DMA mode, but the other 3 show "not applicable"

I'd appreciate any guidence as to how to change this or uninstall/install the drivers! Should I just "update" the driver through windows or???? Can I even update the driver on the HD while it has items stored on it?

    Thanks

I've already explained about your mobo sata controller chipset. Did you DISABLE RAID in the mobo BIOS? Move your hard drives to another SATA PORT and then move your SATA DVD Burner to SATA port 1 or 2. See if that works or not. Until you're able to exhaust all the options that is the only way to know for sure if your SAMSUNG SATA drive is defective.

If you don't disable the RAID in the mobo bios then the drive will not work correctly. Also in the mobo BIOS make sure in the SATA ACHI mode you have it set to DISABLED & SATA PORT 0-3 Native mode set to DISABLED as well.
Also in mobo BIOS make sure the ONBOARD SATA/IDE CTRL (controller) MODE is set to IDE. Hopefully you'll have these things listed in your mobo BIOS!

Nero shows DMA off because "iastor" driver is used, which's settings Nero cannot recognize correctly. If the driver is named "atapi", Nero should report the DMA mode correctly.

  19. OK, so I went in to the bios and changed from Raid to IDE... After it booted up, my computer caught on Fire!!!!!

So after my girlfriend's cousin's dog put the fire out, I got it to boot up and it looks great! The controllers now make sense in the device manager, with DMA on! Thanks budz and everyone else for the help! Also, I learned the difference in the media as you mentioned. I grab a couple TDKs, which I had success with in the past, from a friend and they burned great and worked in numerous players... a little slower than the Memorex, but the Memorex had consistent glitches mid-way in some DVD players.

I think I'm gonna grab some Verbatim from videohelp's sponsors... wouldn't make sense to buy'em anywhere else after such a good experience here. Thanks again guyz!!!

Here's my Nero Log - (Hoping there's nothing wrong ) I have been using Imageburn and it's great... just used Nero this time to check the DMA in the log...

As a note, I would only burn that specific media at 16x max.

  22. OK, I just don't get it.... I have since burned about a dozen perfect DVDs with the TDKs...

Then, last night I tired to burn a TDK DVD and the burner again stop responding at about 68% while using Imageburn. Like before, I was able to close Imageburn but the burner kept spinning and wouldn't respond to anything or open until I rebooted... The only thing that was different this time was the color of actual DVD... Meaning, the first dozen or so TDKs given to me were plain white printables, while this recent burn used the same TDK DVD ( CMC MAG-M01), however the top is a gray color with writing on it.

OK so I then rebooted and burned a DVD successfully, however it took about 8-9 minutes. Also, the Imageburn log showed 2 instances where the buffer had to recover, which I have Never seen before! I then burned another and it took even longer, and had 3 buffer errors/recoveries

I'm waiting on Verbatims but I'm still not convinced this burner is not going to make coasters for them as well! I have a some Verbatim Lightscribes but I don't really want to waste thoughs either...

Could the DVD color "really" make a difference, even though the media ID is identical?

I'll post the log when I get home... If I don't throw my computer out the window 1st...

TDK should be avoided these days, they have gone done the drain like Memorex..............

  24. OK, now I'm really pissed... My Verbatims arrived today, and guess what?

Yup, 1st try and it stopped responding AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It actually made it all the way to 100% and showed "finished", but it just stuck there (sychronizing cache), and so I had to reboot....

After reboot, I tried again. Well, it worked this time but barely made it over 4X????? WTF?

    Please, somebody, please????

did you ever try removing the drive and connecting it to another SATA port? try doing that.

i would swap out the drive with another. i have three of those drives in three different systems. they are all plugged in to different contrllers and all work flawlessly with verbatim. i consider the samsung one of my best drives.

maybe you got a defect---it happens....
    Quote Quote
  27. OK, so I've been burning like crazy trying to figure this out... I moved the drive to another sata port, but unfortunately that made no difference.

I have been able to burn a couple here and there but eventually it stops responding... One of the things I noticed was that when I opened IE while burning, the buffers where shot down and then it would crash or the speed never went back up above 4X on the samsung sata drive, however when I did the same thing while burning with the nec IDE drive, it barely noticed it...

The only way I have been gettinig semi-consistant burns with the samsung sata is by limiting the speed to 16X, using Verbatims, and also being sure not to use any other programs during the burn...

Is the IDE port somehow not affected by other tasks/programs that are running on the SATA hard drives, and therefore allowing that burner to run "unaffected"? I pretty much Always did other things while burning so I'm kinda spoiled... In other words, should I just buy another IDE burner so I can get away with more????

First rule of thumb when burning dvd media is not to have any other programs running in the background. Dvd media will be costly if you continue surfing the net and have all other programs running while burning. If you want another IDE DVD burner then buy it. IMHO why waste money when you have a perfectly running SAMSUNG drive. :P

Calm down and fix your SATA controller problems.
