On the official Samsung website, and everything I've ever googled on this forum and other places, the latest firmware for the 1080P7 player is 052107. However, on the one I got over the holidays from Circuit City, the firmware comes up as "071807.07.1080PHNXEXAA". Does anyone else have this firmware?

Also, although I'm pretty sure there isn't anything to report on, but has anyone gotten region unlocking to work on an R1 player?

How does this player handle DVD-R DL discs? I don't have any to try out and will hold off on getting them if it doesn't work.

    Thanks[/s]

My version is the same. Oddly the samsung site has a different version as the most current - 052107.05.1080PHXEXAA build date of 2008-1-11. From what I understand the update procedure show both dates and gives the user the option to update or not.

You will want to use DVD+R DL as opposed to -R. Most players can handle the +R discs.

I just talked to Samsung and there may be a version mismatch. They are going to send me a disk with the current version of firmware. I would not use the version from their website.

Is there a preferred brand for DVD+R DL blank media? I've stuck to mainly Verbatim and Memorex for everything else (CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R), should I stay the course?

Verbatim is the only real choice for DL media. Everything else is pretty much hit or miss, mostly miss.
