Problem making SVCD copies

I have a SVCD that I mastered on a Datavideo VCD recorder. I tried burning copies onto various brands of CD-Rs with Roxio Easy CD Creator. The SVCD copies play O.K. on PCs. But they aren't recognized and don't play on my standalone DVD player, the Pioneer DV-440. The master SVCD does play on the Pioneer DVD player. How can I get the SVCD copies to play on the DVD player?
With the Easy CD creator, I tried three methods of burning CD copies: the CD Copier feature, Disk Image, and the file drag-n-drop. None of them worked. Should I be using CD-RWs?

Update to problem scenario - I used CD-R media to master the SVCD on the Datavideo VCD Recorder.
