converting wmv to avi

hello everyone,,

i'm just a newbie here and i wanna do a simple task but can't seem to do it..
i have wmv files that i want to convert as avi files
the problem is i can't find a good converter
so i tried i on my virtualdub
i got the plugins, codecs, etc.
but when i opened it in virtual dub, the video didn't have any color...
can someone orient me on what to do??
my head hurts when i read other tutorials
and i don't want to install stuff that i won't really need
i just want to convert..simple as that,,
