Hi
This is my first post so I hopefully I will provide adequate information to solicit a useful reply.
I am in the UK so use PAL and have ulead video studio 11.5+ as my editor.
I own a Sony SR1E videocam(I really liked the focus ring) which records to a hard drive in either HD or SD.
I appreciate that my computer is probably underpowered to edit avchd and I am not in a position to upgrade it at present.
I believe my choices are to :
1 convert the avchd to mpeg-2 using Sony picture motion browser that came with the camera.
2 convert the avchd to mpeg-2 or microsoft avi using video studio.
3 purchase some other software to do the conversion to mpg or avi. Suggestions please.
4 Record in SD.
I ouput my edited movies to cd/dvd or of late have posted them on youtube.
I do not at present have a HDTV so I do not have the means to view HD although will have one day.
I have read various posts on the forum, which I stumbled across a few days ago, and whilst I appreciate that there has been discussions around the subject I haven't come across a discussion that actually addresses my question.
I'd appreciate any guidance as to the best way to go.
Regards

First, I would record in HD and store the original files for future use.
Second, since you have no need for HD at present. You would be best served converting to SD. Which program you use is unimportant at this point. It is often more important to learn the basic steps using whatever you handy (or can get free). As you become accustomed to the process or find shortcomings in your process, you can then search for other/better tools.
You also need to keep in mind that you want to get the video into a format supported by your editing program while also keeping in mind the final output format. You will want to perform as few conversions as possible.
You can start in the HOW TO: Convert section. Just choose the starting video format (AVC) and your desired output format. You will then get a list of guides and tools used.Google is your Friend
