I know DirectX X is only for Vista, but I keep seeing versions for XP on some sites and was wondering if anybody knew anything about these versions.
I know they're hacked and may be less than legal -- but does that count as warez? (If so, please lock/delete this thread!).
The "real" thing is free from Micro$oft, so are these versions...
Anybody using these on their XP machine? Are they total crap? Awesome upgrade? Virus ridden PC death?
TIA!!

(anyways, sorry I can't help you, last game I played for almost an hour before it bored me was Call of Duty - thats about 3 years ago IIRC)

Direct X has been around for a long time. Way before Vista. Direct X 9.0c was the last version for XP. Vista is capable of running Direct X 10, which XP is not.
EDIT: Nevermind mind, I didn't see you wrote "DIRECTX X" meaning Direct X 10. -

Its a real project that is being worked on
Also, some games do support DirectX 10 textures in XP, but bear in mind that they are usually a 'hack' to fool the game into displaying them
Crysis is a prime example of allowing DirectX 10 textures running on XP -

It wouldn't surprise me if SP3 for XP included an official version of DirectX 10. But, if you are really wanting/needing to use DirectX 10 for gaming, then an upgrade to Vista would be the safest solution. And SP1 (not yet released) for Vista solves most of the known performance issues.

I can wait for SP3.
I'll definitely be waiting a looooooonnnnng time before switching to Vista.
Hell, I'm still running Win2K on one of my machines and just switched to XP on my office PC about 6 months ago in order to "upgrade" to Office 2007..."To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." - Steven Wright
