  1. Hey, I know this isn't a "tech support" forum but my problem occurred while only attempting to figure out the TV Capture / Encoding solution. I was following a guide on this forum for using Virtual Dub with the Picvideo JPG3 codec to capture using a TV Card and convert it to svcd in TMPGEnc. Somehow, I have lost ALL COLOR in my videos. The video on the TV Capture software (honestech TVR), ALL VIDEO FILES in Windows Media Player... EVERYTHING is only displayed in black and white now.. with the EXCEPTION of VirtualDub's TV Capture mode. It is the only video that I can get to display in color. No other changes to anything were made other than the capture/encode settings in those two programs. Does anyone have any idea if a setting somehow affects my entire system or what to do to get color back?

I can still capture videos that display black and white.. and when burnt to SVCD it displays them in proper color... so its got to be something with the system's display settings. Anyone have this ever occur that can point me in the correct direction? Thanks in advance!

Could be a problem with your video overlay settings, ActiveX control or your codecs. Try playing one back with VLC. If it works properly, maybe a codec problem.

Does this happen with formats other than MPEG? If not, your MPEG codec may be corrupted. Try installing Stinkys MPEG2 Codec.

If no improvement, let us know.

  3. Thanks for the response. I tried the Stinkys MPEG2 Codec, however it does the same thing in WinDVD and a store bought DVD in the drive. Same problem with VLC. Color video being displayed in black and white.

Thanks to your video overlay comment however I think that is the cause. IN VLC i went to preferences and when i uncheck "overlay video output" it becomes color again! Now I just need to figure out how to undo whatever I did to screw the video overlay up in the first place. I seem to have gotten VLC and Windows Media Player to work fine but WinDVD and my honestech TVR program are still stuck in black and white. I can't find video overlay settings in them. Is there a system setting for it? Thanks again for your help redwudz!

  4. Start two instances of VLC (or one each of VLC and WMP). Play a video in both of them. If one is color and one is black and white you have a video overlay problem. Go through your graphics card's setup applet and fiddle with the video settings. The exact location of the settings varies from card to card and driver to driver but here's an example:
