Can someone help me with the benefit of their expertise?

I have a number of video files in MKV format and am trying to ultimately create a DVD using Ulead VideoStudio 9.0.

VS will not accept the MKV file format. Therefore initially, I used "Super v2007 by eRightSoft" to convert the files to MPEGII format (setting the bit rate @ 8016). However, the quality was much worse that the original MKV file. Then I used Super to convert the MKV file to AVI format (with an MPEG4 video codec). The output quality was quite good.

Then I loaded all the AVI files into VisualStudio and proceeded to author the one hour DVD. The process seemed to be working but after more than 24 hours, the process was only 30% complete. (Using an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 Mhz computer, 2 Gig RAM, 500 GB HD with 400 GB free) This didn't seem to be reasonable because I have never had any one hour DVD take any more than a couple of hours to author.

I suspect that I have made a serious error somewhere.

Can anyone offer me a clue?

Use FAVC or ConvertXtoDVD to convert mkv to dvds. If you want better menus I would import the dvd vobs into ulead videostudio(if it doesn't reconvert then).

cottage you do not have to convert mkv to avi in order to convert it, you can convert it directly using avisynth, use directshowsource, and use a different encoder like Baldrick said, you can also try the top encoders like CCE, Tmpgenc, Procoder

  4. AVStoDVD will do mkv->mpeg2 conversion too.

Keep in mind you must install a mkv splitter (like Haali Media Splitter) to feed video and audio to AviSynth's DirectShowSource.

Hi . I use Convertx for MKV to DVD (vob) and 90% of the time it's click and go and playable on one of my standalones. (the cheapie one).
Recently I have had an audio playback problem with one conversion. The audio worbles or stacattos. So I tried checking the setting for "Don't check/fix audio discontinuities". No change.
NExt I used Super to encode it to VOB and then used NEro 7's Nero Vision to burn it to the disc. Nope. This time the audio was slo-mo or about 1/2 tempo and the image ratio was off. (sorry I'm not the techie I wish I was, that's how I got here right? )

So while ConvertX is nice, I do have a problem that's over my head. Any ideas ( that I might be able to understand) ?

    Thank you!

Perhaps you could provide more information on the .mkv file that is giving you problems. Try using mediainfo on it to determine what kind of audio stream is in the mkv. Sometimes if the .mkv file has other things packaged into it (such as subtitles, pictures, chapters) it can mess conversions up too.
