I am hoping someone can tell me what I doing wrong as I have ruined 6 CDRs and have been reading this forum for 2 days I am still not sure where I am going wrong.
I have XP and it came with Roxio Easy CD Creator Basic, which does not burn VCD's. So I upgraded to Platinum which does, but none of the ones I have burned will play in my DVD player. I have an RCA RC5240P, which is rated very high on this site's compatibility list. I then tried burning using VCDEasy and used a guide from this site to learn how. It makes a lot of noise and sounds like it is burning but the write light on the burner does not come on and the CDR won't play in the DVD. I had to force the drive the first time I used it. Then I read on this forum that Roxio Easy CD Creator causes problems with VDC Easy so I uninstalled the Platinum version but the basic version is still installed. I would perfer to know this is the problem before unistalling it as it came with the system and I don't have a disk to reinstall if it isn't the problem because it is what I use to make all my music disks. I have been reading a lot of posts on bin and cue files and I am not sure this has anything to do with my situation, but I would appreciate any input if maybe the problem is that I have not encoded the mpeg properly.
TIA,
Heidi

Two things to check:
a) Media... You using CDRs... Unless your player says it supports CDRs, chances are you are making coasters... Try burning to CDRW, which literally all DVD players support. If in doubt, make an audio CD on a CDR and try playing it...
b) Software issues... Uninstall EZCD Basic. Install Platinum but also get and install the patches from Roxio to make them work. Then d/l a sample VCD and burn it as a test... -
I had similar problems with EZCD platinum and have never figured out how to fix it. No menu screens work and it often stutters about like there is no tomorrow, but i never have any of these problems with nero.

You can download a trial version of Nero to try it out.
If your CD burner can burn RW discs then I agree that you should experiment with RW discs.
If you are able to get a VCD working with and RW disc you can use the CD copy feature in Nero to make a valid VCD on a CD R disc. If it won't play then the problem is as the post above suggests that your player will read RWs and not R discs. -
As far as I know the RCA dvd players models only play CD-RW, and very few CD-RW's at that. Good luck with this player.

I have a friend that has an RCA dvd and it plays commercial dvd's and vcd's fine but nothing else. No matter waht media we tried or what burning software it would only play commercial media.

I would take your VCD's you made to a store and try them on a different player, a pioneer if you can find one, if they play on it then it is your player.

please ignore all the bad advice regarding what type of CD's to use, it seems these people did not bother to look at the compatibility list the way you did.
YES you should uninstall EZCD. but first write down your registration number for the product. most software has the registration number on the title help page.
EXCD seems to have trouble with VCD's and also seems to cause troubles for other CD burning applications. uninstall the software and give nero a try. you should be able to find a 30 day trial version at any popular download site.
if you want to re-install EZCD later your computer should have at the very least come with recovery CD's. you should be able to find the program on those. if it came pre-installed in your computer then you own a liscence for that product and should have a disc. if you do not have one contact Roxio by e-mail and inform them that you purchased a computer with their software preloaded and require a disc to re-install the application because it has become corrupt.
peace out,
dumwaldo
