Why is it that LG & Insignia can upconvert 1080i over component (non-comercial dvd's) but other players can't? If component is capable of higher resolution, then why block it? Any info would be great.

My guess is cost. Digital upscale is provisioned in the chips w/o additional parts. Upscale to analog requires D/A and filtering.

As a secondary guess it might be easier for most makers to not upscale any DVDs rather than having to check to see if they are non-commercial DVDs and then upscale and if commercial then do not upscale.
Plus how support calls will be generated when some discs upscale and other don't. So they don't upscale via Component and save support costs.
My guess at why. -
The movie industry frowns on anything over 480p being sent over unprotected analog connections.
