"data will arrive too late" - what am I doing wrong?

I tried to author a DVD of an avi (25 fps; 640x480) I converted to m2v (25fps; lanczos4resized to 720x480 with Avisynth). I used DGPulldown to flag it from 25>29.97. When I plugged it into DVDAuthorGUI, I got this warning:

I deleted the file and plugged the avi back into my encoder. This time I forgot to use DGPulldown afterwards and did not get the warning but got another one about DVDAuthorGUI trying to convert it to NTSC so I stopped the program and put the m2v back into DGPulldown and did the 25>29.97 again. When I put it back into DVDAuthorGUI, I got the above "data will arrive too late" warning. The combine audio and video bitrate is well below the target bitrate (the video is less than 3GB and the audio is 96 kb/s).

What am I doing wrong? This is not the first time I've turned a 25 fps 720x480 avi into a m2v and DVD? It seems to have more to do with DGPulldown which has not given me problems with other files.

Either too large of a GOP, or your bitrate/VBV buffer went too high at that point. For 25 to 29.97 keep the GOP at 15 or less. What mpeg encoder are you using? If HCEnc, this is also a problem when changing the VBR bias.

i have the same problem, but it might not be caused by the same thing. i have almost fixed it, and i'm taking a break to post here to help whoever started this thread, because disturbed1 didn't explain much in the first post.

i pasted my error log at the bottom to show where i am. my problem will probably be fixed by the time this post is replied to, so don't bother trying to help me. i want to finish within 2 days and i'll give up on this way to make a dvd which immitates a professional first run video dvd if i can't figure it out in 2 days.

i made a dvd using a handful of different pieces of software to modify the videos and audios (instructions of what i did on my website) which burned and worked. then when i used kdenlive in debian linux to add a transparent still layer to the menu video, and it rendered at double the video bitrate. even when i lowered the video bitrate under half, dvdauthorgui on windows 7 still thinks the bitrate is double, so 25k bitrate doubled is 50k as you can see below. you can also see below that the buffer runs out, so even when i check the ignore errors box in dvdauthorgui, the dvd doesn't work. (as an aside i read on another forum post that checking ignore errors will allow the dvd to burn so it's worth a try to check the box to see if the authoring finishes)

i have narrowed the problem down to the rendering process, so the rendering software for the menu. i'm trying different options to make dvdauthorgui think the video is 25k bitrate video.

i just noticed both buffers are underruning, so i need to play with the bitrates i believe.

well i got it to work. i needed to change the bitrate while adding nav packets to the standard dvd bitrate. i used root terminal in debian linux to do this. i'll post the code here. complete instructions how to make a video dvd like first run professional video dvds are on my website as well as easier instructions to make dvds with premade menus and no menus.

replace input.mpg and output.mpg with the absolute path including all directories. input has to be mp2 or mp4 and output will be mp2 with empty nav packets. you will have to install some libraries if this doesn't work. if you don't have linux, try muxing (multiplexing which means "render" more or less) with dvd type bitrates.

ffmpeg -i input.mpg -f mpegts -target pal-dvd -vb 6000k -acodec copy output.mpg

again complete instructions for making video dvds of all difficulties will be on my website before new years day january 2015 www.Lecksite.com . this is the most advanced type which immitates a movie dvd which was made by the big production companies and uses 5 different programs across 2 operating systems (windows and debian linux) to complete.

This just reeks of spam. Just joined the site for this, almost seven years too late, and promoting your website. Obviously the problem is too high of a max bitrate, probably from using a crappy encoder that doesn't abide by the figures you set. Or maybe you didn't set any max bitrate.

Well, for one, the VBV is wrong for DVD: He set it to 356352 bytes when it should be 224 kBytes. It's also using MP2 audio (which isn't legit for single audio NTSC DVDs).
