Hello I need to get a new DVD Recorder to copy old VHS tapes. I know it sounds lame but I lost my JVC DR-M10 when I moved. I can't find it so I need to get another unit for VHS dubbing.

I really like my Panasonic DMR-ES10 and would use it for the task but it has those time code breaks that are impossible to work with when editing on my Mac.

SO it's down to the new Philips 3575 with hdd or a JVC DR-MV5s combo refurb that I found.
I have a JVC SR-V10U svhs deck for playback although I'm curious about the difference between it and the built-in VCR on the JVC.

I guess the question is whether having the hard drive is worth an extra 200 bucks. I've never had a DVD Recorder with one so maybe I'm ignant to it's great joys.

    Any opinions? Thanks!

Ditto on the Philips recommendation. It's a great machine.

Done! I found a factory refurb for $255 with free shipping on Amazon.com so I got it.
I've had like 100% success with refurbs so I'm not at all worried.
Can't wait! Thanks for the advice!

$255 for no HDD and analog tuner? The Philips 3575 would have been $34 more, total!

Yes, indeed! I got my Philips 3575H at Wally World (Wal-Mart) for $300 and worth every penny. I mainly wanted the 90 day return option in case we didn't get along. The only thing I don't like is the Extra Menu when I finalize. Reminds me a lot of iLO. <g> But what I got is firewire input and USB (which is great) and the + and - R and RW which is going to save me a fortune when family ask me for a TV show because they can't stay awake. <g> Now I can use the +RW disc.

I have a Question. I haven't decided if I want to get my Pioneer 420H repaired or just strip it of parts. It has a burner and an 80 Gig hard drive. If I use my handy usb cable, will the Philips play back content on the Pioneer HDD? (Wabjxo, I can't decide if I think you were joking about the wait two weeks and plug the Pioneer back in trick. <g>) Or maybe I can dump it on my computer?

Thanks wabjxo. I spent some time on Saturday looking through your 3575 posts on AVS. There is a lot of detailed info there. Thanks for doing that.
