I am new to DVD ripping and am having some major problems with black bars. I have a PAL tv and am trying to record some footage from my Wii onto a DVD+RW disc, then rip it to the computer to an AVI file with imtoo DVD ripper platinum 4.
However, every time I try this the file ends up with huge black bars at each side of the video:
Now as I am new to this I do not have a clue what I am doing wrong. These are the settings I used for the rip (I have tried many other variations as well, but nothing will work)
Profile: DivX Movie (*.avi)
zoom: Pan and Scan (Tried all other zooms - never made a difference)
Video codec: mpeg4
Video Size: 720x576 (Tried a lot of other sizes, but again never made a difference)
Bit Rate: 1200
Frame Rate: 25fps
Aspect: 16:9 (tried 4:3 also, but never made a difference)
I am completely confused as to what I should do. Help would be much appreciated!
Here is a link to a sample of the video file: http://www.mediafire.com/?fe5nythoiej

I have not used the DVD Platinum myself but the best way I would fix this video is:
Open it up on VirtualDubMod, set video > full processing, select filters > add > null transform > click cropping and crop the video. next step > add another filter > resize > set the resolution 720*576, resize method > precise bicubic A=-1.00 (i found this as the best one).
Then go to video > compression > select divx / xvid in the list, then configure it with the settings above and finally save as AVI again. -
Thanks a lot, that was very helpful!
The video has had a big improvement. There are no black bars in the video itself, but when I try to play it in Windows Media Player or VLC Media Player it displays black bars at the left and right. This is like a widescreen DVD movie although the the black bars which are usually at the top and bottom are at the left and right.
Is there any way to change it so that it is either in completely full screen or has the black bars at the top and bottom? Thanks again guys! -
depends on what kind of monitor you have. for example, if you have a
4:3 monitor:
a) 4:3 movie - no black bars anywhere
b) widescreen movie - black bars on top and bottom, because the video is wider than the monitor. If not for the black bars, all things would look super slim because the video is stretched vertically to fit the screen
Widescreen monitor: (generally 16:9 or 16:10)
a) 4:3 movie - black bars to the left and right, because monitor is wider than the video here. if you don't want the black bars here, all things would look too fat coz the video is stratched horizontally to fit the screen.
b) widescreen movie - a 16:9 (1.778:1) wide movie would perfectly fit on a 16:9 monitor. If the movie is shot in wider aspect, like 1.85:1 or even 2.35:1, then you'd again have the black bars on top and bottom, although they would be thinner than on a 4:3 monitor.
from what you are saying, looks like you have a widescreen monitor. and the video here isn't as wide. 720*576 = 1.25:1. So you would have the black bars on the sides as per the above, unless you want to have all things looking very fat.
