  1. Most of the DVDs that i have bought i also put them on my PCs hard drive as ISOs. I was thinking about putting my PC beside my TV and hooking it up to the TV.

If i where to do this what format would be ideal? Divx or Xvid? I have used both really can't see a differance in the way they look only thing i like about Divx is that you can now make menus and keep the original movies chapters.
but do they have a remote so i can navigate the menus?

I was going to convert my DVDs to this

    Wide screen DVD's 720 X 480 Divx 3000 data rate 128bit layer 3 audio
    regular DVD's 640 X 480 Divx 3000 data rate 128bit layer 3 audio

This makes the DVD about half the size of the original.

I would suggest buying an extra harddrive and leave them as isos. That way you preserve the quality and save a ton of conversion time.

I recently bought a 500gb maxtor internal sata harddrive at office depot for around a 100usd without rebates. Harddrive prices are falling so much that massive storage is much more affordable now.

You could probably even use an external usb2 harddrive on your pc without lag for standard def dvds.

That would be my suggestion. It might be worth the investment in storage space to save the hassle of conversions and possible synch issues later...
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

  3. I did think about leaving them as ISOs but how do i go about playing them on my TV if i don't want to use a mouse and keyboard? Or is that the only way.

    Thanks

Wouldn't that be the same issue for divx/xvid? The TV can't accept divx/xvid or wmv directly. Someday maybe.

Why can't the TV accept divx/xvid? The PC will play them and then dispaly them on the TV, i do it now theres just no way to control them without a mouse/keyboard.

It seems what you are trying to create is a HTPC. You could look into something like XP Media Center OS, but you need specific video cards. Then it would have a remote control that may be able to play your videos from the computer to the TV the way you want. I just use a regular Vista OS, mouse and keyboard.

    From MS: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/default.mspx

I can tell you it's easier to buy one than to try to convert a existing PC to a MCE. But there are some add on cards like some of the Hauppauge cards that come with remote controls: http://www.hauppauge.com/

And we also have a Media Center Forum where you can get more info: https://forum.videohelp.com/media-center-pc-htpc-f47.html

Check out BeyondTV 4, SAGETV and GBPVR as alternatives to MCE.

These are all HTPC solutions intended to be run from a remote control in a home theater environment.

Be more clear stating your goals.

You half size Dvix files should look almost identical to the originals.

As far as a remote maybe this will work (forget the sender part).
