I want to create a simple instructional video, similar to a powerpoint presentation. I don't want to import video files or images. I need text and audio. This sounds stupid simple, but I can't find a way of doing it. The output needs to be youtube compatible.

    Thanks!

Windows Movie Maker could likely create such a project.
Create your "text slides" aka "photos" in some photo application and import them to WMM. Drop your "text slides" aka "photos" in to WMM timeline/storyboard, add your audio, fine tune with transistions etc...
Save the movie as high quality video (basically a photo slideshow). Have fun.

Have a look at Debugmode's Wink application, you should be able to do what you need and export to Flash format.
