  1. I'm trying to play SVCD (MPEG2) files using Windows Media Player, but it won't recognise the file ,and cannot find a codec for it automatically. I've installed Power DVD, and that makes WMP play the files, but I'd much rather get rid of Power DVD and use a third-party decoder. Anyone know where I can get a good, free one?

    Thanks.

You can try Elecard, it's shareware, and software only. http://www.elecard.com/

I have Power DVD too. It doesn't auto play SVCD's for me. You can use the file mode and browse to the mpg track.

If you keep Power DVD installed (for the mpeg2 decoding) you can use STHplayer http://dvdarea.free.fr/studio/lecteurs/sthsvcd_55.exe it supports SVCD.

  3. Yep, I'm aware of Elecard... but was wondering if there were any free decoders available.

  4. I had the same problem. The solution was install the demo version of WinDVD at http://www.intervideo.com/jsp/Signin.jsp?mode=download and then uninstall it. It leaves the codec that allows SVCD palyback in Windows Media Player 7.
