    Hi everypone,

i'm new to this forum but i have previously visited it for reading some guides.

Now i hope someone can give me some tips about how to make TMPGEnc to create AVC file that work on PSP.

Only way i could convert and play was with mpeg but i wanted to use AVC which has superior quality.
I tested "mp4 converter" from http://www.mp4converter.net/ and it works like a charm for psp conversion. Funny thing is the file created with mp4 converter plays perfect on psp but not my mediaplayer classic (plays fine in windows media player but without sound)

    I have tested both 480x272 and 360x272.
When i encoded with TMPGEnc the file is currupted in PSP and when i check the movie information in PSP the movie codec is not shown which must mean something is wrong. When using mp4converter it works fine and it shows AVC in the same field on PSP information page.

Any tips what can be wrong? there are many options in TMPGEnc so it might be a simple tweek but as a beginner i dont know what to change.

Is there really no one who has used TMPEnc for making psp movies?

    Hi reza666,
I successfully encode video for PSP using TMPGenc 4.0 XPress with the following resolutions:

    - 368x272 AVC 2-pass 768 kbps [4:3]
    - 480x272 AVC 2-pass 768 kbps [16:9]

Your problem is partly due to the fact that you are using unsupported resolution (360x272 is wrong because both values MUST be multiples of 16).

You may use my profiles in the attached zip file.

AHAAA thank you very much m8 for the tips. you are correct about the resolution but since everyone talk about the non standard resolution on different forums i assumed it is the standard format:

    thanks again.

Yeah, I also read lots of things but not all worked

I forgot to tell you that for movies I use 720x480 with 16:9 anamorphic setting because it shows well also on my PS3 connected to a 37" LCD screen.

Thank you for the infor m8, for that i actually use my old xbox1 with mediacenter, although the quality might not be that good but somehow it is so simple to share and browse with xbox.
Some day i hope ps3 can live up to the hype and be my nr1 media center device
Although Sony added Divx support but it is far far away from what i call compatible with movies i "convert" haha

Btw since you are so helpful and know so much about this topic have you ever tested virtualdub for doing conversion?

I used virtualdub last week for editing (since it is free and all) and found it quite good actually. Very easy to use also. It takes a bit more time to set the compression and all but still not a bad tool.

I tested to convert to psp with setting a filer to match the resolution you gave me (360x272) and used lame for sound compression (128kbs) and for video i used MPEG4/MPEG2/Windows media 9.

The result was a corrupted file on the psp unfortunately. All of them work fine on pc of course.
Not really sure which codes is the one to use here, any idea?
All i know is that .mp4 is a quicktime codec but at the same time MPEG4 but why i cant make it work it harder task to accomplish then i thought :/

i did try to search of forums and here but all threads refer to other program. I think TMPGEnc and "Mp4 converter" are the best software for this but if i can get to learn VirtualDub then i can do it all for free

Really great full for any tips.

Hi, I never used virtualdub. Maybe I'll give it a try just for fun, although I know that settings for PSP are very hard to find unless native support is given.
As to the formats, bear in mind that there is a difference between containers (such as MP4, AVI, MKV) and codecs ( such as H264, AAC, MPEG4, MP3). PSP supports MP4 container with either H264 or MPEG4 video codecs and AAC audio codec. Therefore you cannot use AVI (Xvid, Divx) or other combination (like using MP3 audio).
Furthermore, there are some odd settings to tweak to make all work, like setting threads to 1.
I will let you know if I can make it
Meanwhile try SUPER ©, a free converter which uses ffmpeg, x264 ecc. and which has a profile for PSP.

Cool m8, thanks for the tips. Looks like a nice program. Tried to install it with Sandboxie (http://www.sandboxie.com/) but it failed which means it will install service or dlls. I already have the K-lite package so it might mess up some stuff. You know windows, the more similar files the more problem.
Tested your profile for TMPGEnc and it works pretty good except the 480x272 did not cover the whole screen, was playing more like 4:3 window. the PSP was not able to show it at full screen for some reason but the quality was very good and all. Much better then 368x272. Thanks for that.

I still think if we could use VirtualDub it would the the ultimate solution since it do not put unnecessary codec on the system and it is a pretty good all around tool. Wish more people could be as helpful as you

O well i'm off to spain for 2 week of vacation so take care for now 8)

these are the templates i use. one for 4x3 and one for 16x9 , crop the video in tmpeg 4.0 and pick the correct aspect in the template and hit go. files can be quite larege (average vcd bitrate) but look stunning on my 42" plasma. and besides these let u do the encode in one pass (size aint too much of a concern for me). got questions hit me back. oh yeah tmpeg 4.x is the only one that gets the a/v sync right the first time
