  1. I have a movie that is just one VOB file, and nothing else. How can I take this file and make a playable DVD out of it? I have Windows XP, I also have Nero 8. Can I do it with Nero, or are there hopefully free utilities for doing this? I have no experience with authoring, so hopefully there's a guide somewhere. Thanks!

You can do it with Nero, but I wouldn't.

If the VOB is less than 1000MB then you can just use IFOEdit to create the missing ifo and bup files, and you have a DVD.

If it is larger then you need to author it correctly. GUIForDVDAuthor should be able to do this for you. Use Rejig or tmpgenc mpeg tools (or Womble, if you have it) to demux back to elementary streams, then author your disc.

can't you just load that vob into an all-in-one converter and create your own chapters and menus. Something like FAVC, convertxtodvd, gui for dvd author, dvdforger, etc....

  5. Count me among those who think Nero might be fine for what you want to do. In spite of all the comments from the Nero-bashers, I've had acceptable results for the simple tasks I've wanted to do with it. (I know, the Nero-bashers will say "acceptable" is never "acceptable"!)

If you want menus, use NeroVision (although it will want to recode your vob which will likely diminish the quality some, maybe more than you can tolerate). Again, see if the results are acceptable . . . .

As to guides, check your Nero help files and equivalent PDF versions and manuals, available at www.nero.com if you don't already have them.

With DVDs costing less than US$0.25-.30 each, you won't risk much by trying what you already have, Nero. If you don't like the results, try some of the other suggestions.

[Edit: I removed my erroneous comment about using Nero Express. As MysticE reminded, Express doesn't "build" a compliant DVD. Mea culpa.]

If all you want to do is create a simple, playable DVD from your VOB, use Nero Express, drag the vob into the appropriate spot, and let it build it for you. See if the results are "acceptable" to you.

Nero Express will not work, it will not 'build' anything. NeroVision is what you want. And if in fact it is a VOB that matches your TV system (PAL or NTSC) it should not rencode. Note I'm still using Nero 6.

  7. Thanks for the quick reply, guns1inger. I did exactly what you said with IFOEdit (the vob was under 1gb), and it worked perfectly!
