I have a surround sound system and I am currently burning some episodes of different TV shows that I downloaded onto a DivX data disc, and I was wondering if the files are capable of having 5.1 channel audio or just simple stereo sound?

  2. It depends how your particular file was created.

Yet, it is possible to have AC3 5.1 stereo audio muxed into an .avi container

If you want to determine if your particular file has 5.1 audio, just run it in gspot or mediainfo for more information

I'm kind of a newb with this program...I opened the file in GSpot but I don't know what some of it means, where does it say AC3 5.1 info? Actually, scratch that, it's obvious where it says that, but what exactly would it say to indicate that it was or wasn't?

See the below images. Of course the second image shows the stats of a DVD file, but even an XviD / DivX can have 6 channel sound muxed in the avi file.
