I bought a whole bunch of these at $8 per 50. What is the quality of this brand like?

  2. I've always had good luck with any well known brand of blank dvd's, including Philips, I use LG burners exclusively, I think its got more to do with burner/blank compatability, I am not referring to the longevity of the discs.

The "whatever" brands that Wal-Mart etc sell I would stay away from though, as you do not save much in the end.

Not really. You can look at
    http://www.nomorecoasters.com
and decide for yourself. We generally recommend Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden around here.

Victoriabears experience parallels other LG burner owners (including my own) - particularly those whose burners are based on the Renassas chipset.

Last time I checked Phillips was relabeling CMC media. Nomorecoasters finds fault with CMC media.

It works just fine for me when I use it.

Many of the burners used by posters on this board are not as tolerant of CMC media.

This may sound bizarre; it sure feels that way. I wonder if anyone has experienced this: I'm using Philips (CMC) DVD-Rs with DVDShrink & Nero 6.6. Copies I am getting (with or without compression) look brighter and more edgy--slightly glary, than the source. With other brands like Verbatim, or even pre-CMC Philips, the copy looks like the source with no added edge. Even odder, a re-copy from an edgy Philips clone *also* looks like the source from which the Philips disc came, without that added sheen. We're just dealing with zeroes and ones here, so how is this possible and has anyone else seen this? (By the way, I've otherwise had amazingly good luck with Philips: only a few coasters in hundreds of discs.)
