I am encoding a video direct from the timeline in Final Cut Pro for DVD and the lip sync in the resulting Quicktime .mov (or even mpeg) file keeps playing out of sync even though everything on the timeline is in sync. Has anyone ever encountered this? Any suggestions?

What's your source mtrl? Even if this is Mac (moving you to the Mac forum) sync problems often stem from VBR audio in your source file.

what if you export a Self Contained Quicktime movie first,
 then drag/drop that into Compressor?
 What happens then?
does it encode correctly?"Everyone has to learn, so that they can one day teach."
