    Hi all,

I use HD component cables to connect my DVR to my Sony Bravia HDTV. Everyone told me that I should use HDMI for several reasons; clarity, less cables etc. I took their advice and purchased an HDMI cable (the $20 dollar one's). However, the HD box that I was using through component didn't have an HDMI output port. Time Warner gave me a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300 DVR replacement box with HDMI output for free. The box is great, however, I only get video out of my TV when I use the HDMI cable, no sound. I hooked up the component cables and it works fine. Any ideas on what the problem can be?

First guess is that the audio input selection in the TV is incorrect. Next would be a bad cable. But I would think that when HDMI input in the TV is selected, it would automatically select the correct audio also. So try a different cable?

But someone with more HDMI experience may have some better ideas.

    And welcome to our forums.

Thank you very much. I think I know what the problem is. You know when you first plug in newer TV's they do an "initial set-up" scan which detects digital and analog signals? Maybe I just have to run the scan again while the HDMI is plugged in for my tv to detect the audio?

My friends told me that if I pour a glass of cold water directly on the HD box, it conducts the digital signals better giving you awesome H20i resolution. It didn't work though. Just kidding, thanks again

HDMI cable, no sound where? At the TV or at the S/PDIF ports?

Original 8300HD forced digital audio to the HDMI port. Later firmware allows menu choice for audio to HDMI or the coax/optical ports.

I figured it out. It was a setting in my box that I just found. From the HD box's menu; I went to devices, then scrolled down to Audio then selected HDMI. Thank you all for your help

  6. I have been very pleased with my 8300HD-dvr connected to my home theater system. I generally leave my Sharp 1080p TV set for "dot by dot" with great results over the hdmi cable.
If you ever decide to connect your 8300 to your home theater receiver, you can tell your 8300 to send a full dolby digital signal to the receiver via the optical digital cable connection. And, you can also add on storage capacity via an eSata external drive. Not all external drive combo's work, so do some research first - but my Vantec case with Western Digital 500gb sata drive inside works fine connected to the eSata connector on my 8300.
