I am trying to rip TV episodes from a DVD and encode them each to their own separate file. Currently I am ripping with DVDdecrypter and batch converting to DVR-MS with Videoredo. I am using DVR-MS files because I am watching them through and XBOX 360 extender streamed through mediacenter. The problem I am having is that the resulting DVR-MS files are very jerky. This happens when I play them on the laptop or on the mediacenter.

The laptop I have been using is a pentim M 1.6 Ghz w/ 1.25 GB ram. I tried shutting down extra programs but I still get this problem. Anyone know what migh tbe causing this?

Can't you just stream MPEG-2 (the format DVD uses) rather than doing this conversion? My best guess would be that the conversion to DVD-MS is either doing resizing (this is bad on interlaced video unless you know enough to properly resize with AviSynth) or re-encoding the video and picking the incorrect field order to encode it. I know of no fix for this except to either simply NOT convert to DVD-MS or check the settings in VideoReDo and if you see "Bottom field first" or "Top field first" selected for you, use the opposite.

I really don't think using DVD-MS is a good idea. WMV works a LOT better on Xboxes. Surely even good old MPEG-2 without conversion after ripping would be better.

DVR-MS is microsoft's MPEG2 format. This is the format that mediacenter records to in the first place. I was using this because I think I will have better luck with FF, RW and pausing in mediacenter. Videoredo has an option to convert to MPEG2 instead, I could try that, I just didn't think that either really need any encoding to convert from Vobs so there wouldn't be much difference between the two.

As far as converting to WMV, I tried DVD-WMV. I could get them to convert one at a time but I could never get the batch encoder to work. It would always tell me that it could not find determine the right audio stream or something like that. The file I did try worked fine, but I am not really concerned about size of the episodes that much as I plan on deleting them after I watch them. This being the case, I would rather sacrifice space and retain the image quality of the MPEG2 (DVR-MS) and keep the short conversion time.

I'll try the Bottom/Top field thing if I see it. I'll also give plain old MPEG2 a shot.
