I have been encoding video for web and broadcast for a few years now and while I am certainly no expert, I understand the basics of whats going on under the hood. I was curious though in quicktime, what is actually going on when i click the High Quality checkbox in the Video Properties window, video track selected, visual settings tab? If I open an NTSC video, select this checkbox and then save as - NTSC video, will this positively or negatively affect the video if I author it to a DVD?

Also, I encode a lot of video that originally aired on Braoadcast and now is moving online. Is their a resource of some sort that can help give guidelines or baseline ideas for adjusting broadcast video to web color space? Anything to help take some of the guesswork out of making color and luminance adjustments.

    Thanks

    Second Question--Presets in Your NLE?
Quicktime Streaming Export Options have always for me been
    WYSIWYG.

First Question--DVD is more dependent on the Bitrate Compression,
than the footage going in. You can have great footage going in,
but if it is over 2.25 hours and your trying to fit it to DVD-5
(Single Layer) you will have to adjust the bitrate or the audio
to compensate to keep quality up.

    Hi Terryj,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. The first question I have is more about what the high quality check box in the visual settings tab actually does? It works well on NTSC video on a progressive computer screen, but I can't for the life of me figure out or find an explanation of what it is actually doing to the video. Which is what worries me when I save out an MOV to be authored to a DVD. Just not sure what it is actually doing to the video.

I suppose the second question is not a Quicktime question but more of a NLE or Compressor/Cleaner/Episode Pro question. I am not too worried about presets, but rather more concerned about the actual adjustments (black level, white level, saturation, contrast, etc.) and some information about how the Broadcast color space differs from web. Any resources you know of or could explain would be great.

    Thanks again.

In the QuickTime Player help files, this is explained. Seach for "high quality". Under Support Articles, look for QuickTime: MoviePlayer High Quality Setting, or its online counterpart Article 30399.

Hi, these check boxes are only for display in QuickTime Player with some files (interlaced, like DV).
(PS: I don't know the real english translation, my system is in french )
    - high quality (on no other check boxes) displays the whole file = both fields (eg: 720*480)
    - high quality and one field (2 check boxes) displays half of your file = one field (eg: 720*240, stretched/displayed like a full image)
-one field and deinterlace (2 check boxes) or just deinterlace, displays a quarter of your file (eg: 360*240, stretched/displayed...)
but I can't for the life of me figure out or find an explanation of what it is actually doing to the video. Which is what worries me when I save out an MOV to be authored to a DVD. Just not sure what it is actually doing to the video.
Nothing. All these settings are only for display inside QTPlayer, no side effects if you export file (quality will be maintain).
To apply these settings inside the exported file, you must use QTKit.framework or QuickTime.framework. These options are not used by commun applications.

Broadcast has a lower range than "computer" (=web).
Broadcasting has no white (the most clear is "RVB/yuv" 16/255 = light grey) and no black (the most dark is "RVB/yuv" 235/255 = dark grey). With computer you can use the whole range (from 0/255 to 255/255), FCP had an option for this range called "super white".

    bye
