You might want to try GhostWord:

As for the paywares, I'd recommend Jaws PDF Editor or NitroPDF.
Evidently, Acrobat itself is the most complete solution, but unless
you manage to find and buy versions 4 or 5, 'tis not a good idea
(too much bloat). Just my opinions of course.

You might try to create the document in the application of your choice and print to CutePDF Writer

And as an alternative to the bloatware of Acrobat Reader and it's endless updates, try the freeware Foxit: http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

It's much faster and there are add ons for creating and editing PDF files. (Those are not freeware, but reasonably priced, especially compared to Acrobat. )

    Foxit is better for reading.
    PrimoPDF is better for writing.
I own Acrobat 8, but uninstalled it, piece of unstable garbage.

  7. For a whole family of PDF utilities:

    www.pdf995.com/

The fully functional free versions display a sponsor page in your web browser each time you run the software , but that is a small price to pay for the wide array of options. To remove the ads, the cost is $9.95 per module or $19.95 for all three.
