Just want to say thank you to all the persons who post guides here (they helped understand it all) and tell about a success story. I have a 450 Mhz K6-2 processor (Win98SE) with 128 Megs RAM, 18 Gig hard drive, and 24 x CDR drive, and separate DVD drive. I can play a DVD (via ATI Radion PCI board) with no problems.
1. Rip. Please go to www.dvdripguides.com and look at their FAQ/ guides . It works and works well to explain how to do it all starting with SMART RIPPER.
2. Capture. Go to www.geocities.com/lukesvideo to get a great guide (or series of guides) to do capture with VIRTUALDUB. You will need 10 to 20 GIGs space just to capture. I used a pinnacle DC10 + card.
3. Encode (and split too). Use TMPENC to do this. Reference www.dvdripguides.com again. This took 24 hours just to do this part alone (1.5 hour movie). The other parts take a few hours on their own to do. But it did work. Just be patient. You can do other things while this is working, as the application will go into the background without crashing. Does someone have an idea how to speed things up (as cheap as possible)? I do not wish to spend $500 to get a faster encoding machine (see my other post). Remember to split the file into CDR size files at the end.
4. Burn. You can use NERO to burn an SVCD complient CDR. No matter what others have said, it does work, and works well to burn. I am using the latest version. It does work, but you need to follow www.dvdripguides.com again. This is the easiest way. I printed the guide as a reference.
5. Play. I am using WinDVD 3.1 which came with my DVD drive. It will play SVCDs with no problems. I have seen almost all other software have a problem (ATI VCD player, native Windows Media Player, freeware players, etc.). Try to get this with your DVD drive or some other way.
This all works. First time I tried. No problems. I play the result on a Daewoo (5000) standalone DVD player.
I just need it all to work faster. I will answer questions. Good luck!

DVD 2 avi should take you around 15 minutes. I am on a P3 866 w 512 sdram.
The important thing to remeber about encoding is that it is all processor driven. Don't worry of memory as long as you have a fair amount, the cpu is where you want to invest.~~~Spidey~~~

I am quite familier with RIPPING which only takes 15 minutes. ENCODING to SVCD takes 24 hours on my slow machine. That is the process I wish to speed up.

Upgrading via barebones system (Mobo, CPU, case) to an AMD Athlon 1500 for $180.
Time to upgrade and trade in my old barebones system. -
I hear many people claim they have a slow machine. Here are my specs. I have a 133 MHz processor, 128 Meg EDO RAM, 2 CDRW drives, 2 hard drives (1 20 gig, and 1 60 gig), an upgraded modem (56 k vs 28 k), installed my own soundcard, cuz it came with none, so I think I may own the slowest computer that does anything with vcd's
