As you can tell I have a very old cam corder, but it has done me well.
I've decided after a long break to get back into things.
I have no idea however how to get the footage from my 8mm tape to the pc so I can burn to disc.

Anyone out there got any ideas??? ( I am blonde, so make it simple, lol)

I have bought a firewire but discovered its no use to me, sao before i go buying anything else, I thought i'd better ask around.

    Many thanks in advance.

Start with whatever outputs the cam uses. Being older, you are likely stuck with S-Video or composite video outputs only. In which case you will need a capture card in your PC. You then connect the video output of the cam to the video inputs of the capture card and capture(record) the video in real time.

Something like this http://svp.co.uk/product/pinnacle_dazzle_dvd_recorder_4340 is going to be your cheapest and easiest option.

It is instead of a capture card. What is referred to as a capture card is usually just that, a card that fits inside your computer and can capture, this is an external capture device. It plugs into a USB port on your computer and you plug your camcorder into it. It even comes with software that isn't great but is fairly simple to use (although whether it is blonde proof or not I don't know, I could always give it to my daughter to find out....) and works.

    CCD-TR411E is Hi8

A simple standalone DVD recorder is an alternate method.

    many thanks
I have no problems watching it through the tv but i wanted to start using my cam again and really wanted to be able to put it onto dvd, for keeps, kinda thing.

The dazzle instructions just say rca video cable or s-video cable but i cannot find either that has an end which will fit my cam

    I'm totally lost (again).

After getting dazzle I've also found i cannot run the studio side of things as its says i need 512 physical memory, i only have 256. Another .

    So frustrated now!!!!

    But thanks xxx

Correction. I found a reference that says the CCD-TR411E is a Video8 camcorder.

In that case it would just have a yellow RCA connector for video and a white RCA connector for mono audio.

Connect Yellow on the camcorder to yellow on the Dazzle and white on the camcorder to white on the Dazzle. You'll only have mono audio but as that's all the camcorder recorded you can't expect beter than that. In the Dazzle software, tell it to use the Composite input. You don't need to worry about specific cables, a cable intended for audio will work just as well.

Connect up as above, put the camcorder in Player mode and press play. You should see picture and sound on your computer.

OK, so go yellow to yellow and black to white. Yellow is always video, stereo audio is sometimes red and white, sometimes red and black, mono audio can be either red, white or black (or just about any colour you choose except yellow!).

If you are in postcode ares NN, PE or NR, it might be easier if I call round and set the bugger up for you (they are my work areas)!

Go here http://www.ulead.co.uk/dmf/runme.htm and download the 30 day free trial of DVD Moviefactory. My 19 year old (blonde) daughter mastered it in a few minutes and a friend who finds text messages too complicated uses it too. Not that I'm insinuating anything of course, but.......

Yes, Scotland has the crap weather at the moment, we've got 12 degrees, bright sunshine but freezing wind!

Sorry for not replying sooner, been in London all weekend. I've had the 'cannot start the capture graph' error before on othe Ulead software. If I remember right it's a common one with a simple fix. But..... I can't for the life of me remember what it was.

I'll have a look later and see if I can find it. It may be the same thing that was causing the Dazzle software to crash as well.

Ah, just found it. It is caused by a DirectX error. For Windows XP, you need to have DirextX 9c installed. It may be that you've got an earlier version or that yours has got corrupted by something. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=4B1F5D0C-5E44-4864-93CD-464EF...displaylang=en or http://www.directx9soft.info/uk/ and download it.

If I remember right, you may need to install DirectX and then re-install the software.

Blimey, this is getting complicated. OK, so Pinnacle seemed to work but the picture was jerky. Did it record and was the recording jerky or was it just jerky when you were watching it while recording? The Dazzle is a USB device and ideally needs a USB2 connection. Is it plugged into a USB socket on the front or back of your computer? On some motherboards, the sockets on the back are USB2 and the ones on the front are USB1.1 so are slower. If this is the case you sometimes get a message saying that you have plugged a high speed USB device into a low speed socket (but not always). Are you running Windows XP SP2 (Go to Control Panel > System > Open and it should say Windows XP, Service Pack 2) as pre-SP2 didn't support USB2.

Alternatively, book yourself a holiday on the Broads and drop it in on your way by.....

It should all work. I've got an older generation Dazzle device that will work on a 1.5 GHz laptop. Usually this sort of thing is down to a problem with the setup of the computer itself that only become apparent when you ask it to work that bit harder.

Ok, I have sp2, on windows xp.
    I have a usb 2

Have just tryed to open the pinnacle again and its just freezing now.

If I didn''t have an auld man in the hospital I'd take you up on the visit, trust me, this is driving me so mad I'll need a holiday shortly!!!I cannot even get the frozen pinnacle window to close!!

It has to be simpler than this........

I thank you so very much for your time with this Richard....your a star!!
