Just a general question about Vista Premium Processing. I noticed that my pc tends to process a lot of data when sitting idle, is this a normal occurrence with Vista? I am suspicious that it's not (why would a processor do such a thing when sitting idle) but when I look at the task manager I don't see anything that seems out of the ordinary, looks like a virus, or is taking a large amount of system resources. And, of course I am running a firewall/virus program, etc (McAfee Security Center). Any thoughts? Thanks!
PC Setup: AMD Athlon 64 x2 6000+, 3 gig ram, Vista Premium.
P.S. just for the record I like Vista Premium quite a bit. I was worried about switching from the tried and tested XP, but pleasantly surprised at how much I like the new operating system (and thankfully most apps I use are compatible).

McAfee and Norton and huge resource hogs. Turn off the services with service manager and see if the utilization goes down.

Thanks for the quick response. I think I actually figured out what it was (I checked task manager again checking the "all users" box) It looks like its the system idle process. But that being said, does that make my computer appear to be processing data so much? Thanks.......

Same here man, I just got a new pc yesterday and I noticed that it makes noise while Im not using it. How many processes are running on ur pc? When I first turned on it had 79 running. After uninstalling all the crap that it came with, i still ended up with 58. (If you installed it clean yourself it would be interesting to know how many you got.) I would like lower the # but I unistalled most of the junk I see. Another problem I have is that the CPU meter gadget shows that my ram is about 39% used constantly, many times in the 50s. I have 2gigs of ram and core 2 duo E6750.
BTW
I am surprised how much I like Vista also. They didn't just pretty up the interface, it has many convenient features I like. -
Most often with Vista, it's indexing your drives. Kind of a pain, but when you use the 'Search' function, you will see it finds most things before you finish typing your query. So it does have some advantages.
It also scans your computer and system for problems during the time the system is idle and that will show up as disk access. You will get used to it. Vista does a lot of things differently than XP.
My two Vista computers have about 50 processes running most times. Video cards on Vista can also use some of your RAM memory, and you may see that in Task Manager. It's a good idea to have 2GB of RAM as there are a lot of Vista processes that can use idle RAM. Even at idle, one of my Vista computers is using about 700MB. That is for the video card mostly. Even without a add-on card, it will use 300MB or better most times. But that's what the RAM is for.
I like the OS also. -
There was something elsewhere about FAT32 vs NTFS on Vista indexing, I think it was FAT32s were for USB with quick disconnect?
