I've managed to get video from VHS -> DVD Recordable -> Computer. Now I 've managed to edt the video, which runs and plays fine. Now I need to turn it into a codec which is runable on any windows PC (xp or later), which has no internet connection. IE I need to put it into a codec that windows natively supports. I can't seem to find a list of codecs that windows comes with (only that it supports avi, mpeg, etc).

Does anyboduy know of a codec or list of codecs I could use? And the best way to change from the current codec to the natively supported one?

If your wondering why, the video contains footage my boss want to use in a power point presentation which he shows all over the world. He wants the presentation on a memory stick but doesnt want the people running the presentation to have to start installing codecs. I can't guarentie the conference computer will be hooked to tthe internet for media player to automatically download the codec im using.

I've currently managed to get the video from VRO into both avi and Mpeg fromats using Avidemux

I it is only for Windows PCs then WMV 8 should play on XP or later. I believe 9 requires at least a codec upgrade, if not WMP10.

Mpeg 1 should also play on any computer.

You could also include a player on the flash drive, most aren't very big.

You can get Mplayer and VLC media player in a compact format for flash drives here, along with other useful compact programs: http://portableapps.com/apps

Yet another option would be MakeInstantPlayer (freeware) to make a self-running video file. I tried it out a few months ago and it worked fine. Uses Mplayer code so should work with most any video format.

MakeInstantPlayer looks nice. But I tried with some videos but I just get a black screen, probably an overlay issue with mplayer...and I guess that the average user have no idea how to fix that.

  7. You can also convert the file to mpeg-1 format + mp2 for audio.

It will play on any windows version from 95 to Vista.

If you use VLC for a portable device, make sure that it is the portable version. VLC is a very nice program. It has internal codecs and therefore it doesn't rely on host systems codecs being installed - nice!
