Hi. I recently installed Windows 98 SE on an older computer someone gave me. I intended to use it strictly for audio and video encoding so that my primary computer would be free for everyday usage. I installed Xvid and all my mpeg4 clips play fine in media player, but when I try to open them in Virtualdub it says that it can't use directshow decoders and that it can only use video for windows codecs. I use virtualdub with xvid all the time on my other computer so this doesn't make any sense to me. Is Windows 98 compatible?

If you have access to it, Win2k is a better choice, I think.
It doesn't demand much more horsepower than Win98, and is compatible with just about all modern software.

If you want to strip it down, look at utilities like nLite on MSFN forum

Seems that directx 8.x solved this issue on mine, but that was 4 years ago so I could easily be mistaken. Something about a VFW-directshow wrapper codec, or filter.

Which version of Xvid did you install? I know there's a version out there that only installs DirectShow filters for decoding Xvid video, but offhand, I'm not sure how recent it is.

I've got a Win98 system in another room running both VirtualDub (and VDubMod) with Xvid (all more or less the most recent versions) just fine.

Also, if you can't get the Xvid codec proper to work, you can also try installing ffdshow, and configuring that (using the VfW configuration) to decode Xvid.
