  1. My P5K Asus mobo has 4GB of Transcend 1GB Dual-channel DDR2 800 (4 X 1 GB DDR2-800) installed, but Vegas v8 detects and lists only half of this = 2GB. How can I have Vegas use the other half also? I realize it won't be a full 2 GB since the OS is grabbing some of it.

    Running XP/SP2.

    Many thanks.

XP doesn't show you the full 4GB either, even though your BIOS will. Asus MB seem to be the worst, with many posts out there regarding Asus mobos and as little 2 - 2.2 GB ram being displayed as available.

  3. 32-bit Windows applications can only get a maximum of 2GB, irrespective of how much RAM you have. This is true even if you run the app on 64-bit Windows.

It arises from the fact that 32-bits can represent up to 4GB and that the upper half is reserved for the system (i.e., not applications).

There are some apps that can get 3GB using a tweak but they generally are more trouble than they are worth and have to be written in a special way.

My Windows XP Pro reports 3.25GB of RAM. It's actually 4GB. The processor is Core2Duo E6750, Intel DP35DP mobo. I didn't install or do anything exotic.
For the nth time, with the possible exception of certain Intel processors, I don't have/ever owned anything whose name starts with "i".

  6. The 4GB address space is shared with hardware that uses memory mapping.

You can look in Device Manager to see exactly how much memory mapping a device uses.

Some applications are capable of using up to 3 GB of RAM with the help of the /3GB qualifier:
Memory Support and Windows Operating Systems.

This setting is only recommended for server environments running with expansion cards that have drivers tested with the 3GB switch. In regular PC's this could bring in instabilities due to driver issues.

If your application was build with the 3GB switch in mind and all your drivers are OK, then you could use upto 3 GB of RAM with your program.

This is a nice and simple explanation of memory limits:
