Hi, new laptop new set of installs everything is dandy until avi re-comp... When Avi re-comp try to install Avisynth it gives me can't write on devil.dll and asks to close the program that uses it yet I've no idea how to do that... Any help would be greatly appreciated thus this is not a first hand video related.

Have you tried close ALL programs and try install avirecomp / avisynth ? or restart the computer and the first thing you do is to install avirecomp / avisynth.

Hi, a quick update: I found which program uses devil.dll (which avisynth wants to write into during install). That would be Explorer.exe What's confusing me is that the dll file, created by Abysmal Software and although I've found unsettled info about them, I couldn't find the actual service or file that uses it in explorer. So I'm even more baffled about it.

Yup, I tried to install the Avisynth first thing right after a boot but still no dice... I also downloaded the devil.dll and it's significantly smaller than the one in my system. Obviously, explorer.exe is not something I can halt.... or is it?

  5. devil.dll is the "Developer's Image Library" and is used by other programs for image manipulation etc.

My guess is that you have some codec that uses it. Explorer will load codecs when displaying thumbnail images of movie files.

Try closing all Explorer windows before installing avisynth.

If that doesn't work, disable generation of thumbnails in Explorer, then try.

If that fails, reboot then try again.

  7. two years later, SSDD
I've managed to pass beyond devil.dll only after rebooting in safe mode AND rename it in something else.
Though, I don't like the fact it's smaler then what I had, will see what will gone happen
(It was needed by AutoGK which came with all it needs)

that's all I wanted to say, and for that I find troublesome all this registration process, well... good luck to whatever you need
