right during the Xmas buying season?

And next week, the week of the 10th, Microsoft plans to make the Vista SP1 RC build available to anyone interested in downloading it from the Microsoft Download site.

Vista SP1 includes security, performance and reliability updates. Microsoft is emphasizing that in spite of the security updates, Vista SP1 won’t break applications on anywhere near the scale that Windows XP Service Pack 2 did when it was released in 2004.

    No thanks.

I wouldn't take a free copy of VISTA in any of its incarnations.

Well of course not! Vista already broke everything! SP1 has nothing left to break!

Seriously though, I had very little trouble installing SP2 for XP. I had a couple of minor program crashes related to DEP, but these were readily fixed with driver and program updates.

M$ seems to have forgotten what an OS should be. It should only be something that handles communication with hardware, provide a GUI, file management and security. Beyond that it should stay out of the way. There is also no reason for six different versions.

XP Pro SP2 broke my ATI AIW 7000-series cards' functionality with PAL input. Aside from that, SP2 was fine. I upgraded to a newer card anyway (9000-series).
