  1. With simpler DVDs I've authored without scene selections and one or two audio tracks and subtitles, I've just edited the XML settings for the play options adding "audio=0" or "audio=1" and "subtitle=64" things get more complex for DVDs with scene selections and other options where selecting a scene will play it with the audio track you first selected when you added the title and may not turn on the subtitles unless your DVD player is set up to find them.

There is a guide using PGCEdit to set default audio and subtitle tracks but discovered some advanced options in DVDAuthorGUI 1.013 when I was putting together my menus that I don't recall seeing in some of the older guides for making menus with the program. Here is a screenshot of the titleset menu editor with the advanced tab selected (the menu screen itself is blacked out because its a motion menu and control+printscreen does on my computer does not seem to pick up video on the screen (even when its paused):

Has anyone tested these options, will setting them up for each menu button be the same as manually adding "subtitle=64" and "audio=" at the beginning of each chapter button in the XML file?

The title that I'm authoring right now has one subtitle track and one audio track. In the advanced tab they are both set automatically on default. Since there's only one audio track, I don't think I have to worry about that but is the "default" subtitle track I added? After all, subtitles are an "addition" like secondary audio that's added after the title and primary audio are added. Also, below the "default" and "off" options on the subtitle dropdown is "1" which could also be the track I added (there's also a 1 in the audio dropdown but here I'm guessing the default and track 1 are the same). So, to keep the subtitles on for all the chapters, should I leave it at "default" or select "1" and should I even touch the audio tab since there's only 1 track?

With 'default' selected, the GUI does not write a "audio=" or a "subtitle=" into the xml. Subtitle 'off' means "subtitle=63", 1 is "subtitle=64", etc.

  3. I authored one dvd where the play command and chapters were just set on default subtitle using the advanced menu options. My older player did not pick up the subtitles (I had to hit the button) but it seems to work in my newer player where you can set the default subtitle option in the setup. The second DVD I authored, I set the subtitle option to "1" for "play" command and for all of the chapter marks in the menu editor and my older player now turns on the subtitles automatically. I like this option in DVDAuthorGUI.
