    Hi all,

Hopefully this should be in the right spot, if not I apologize before hand.

I was sent this link from the Home Theater Alliance:

    http://www.audioholics.com/news/industry-news/mpaa-dmca-takedown-notice

It appears that the MPAA didn't quite follow the rules of the GNU GPL license and one of the Ubuntu foundation members has thought that was wrong. After not getting any response from the MPAA, he decided to request a take down of their site.

I got a chuckle out of the story at least.

I'd be curious to see what else happens with this story, and thought others might like to take a look as well.

Again, hope this isn't in the wrong section.

EDIT -> Missed this link the first time through:

    http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20071204-mpaas-university-toolkit-hit-with-dmca-t...violation.html

Looks like the MPAA is stating that they will comply with the GNU license in the very near future. Still I found the whole situation a little comical.

Some interesting quotation for the article:

"MPAA has developed to allow confidential tracking of file sharing on university networks."
"University Toolkit is much more like a rootkit than a toolkit."
"The first thing the software does is call home for an update, giving away the IP address on any computers that are running the software."

    Conclusion:

Beware of Greeks bearing gifts and free rippers that phone home for updates every time you use them. (and keep logs on your PC of all use.)

Sounds like the MPAA big shots have been hanging out with the Sony big shots and comparing notes.
