I am trying to open up a mkv file with virtualdubmod, so i can then demux the streams and then follow this guide:
    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=241422

However, when the vdubmod is done parsing the mkv, this is the error i get:

Any ideas as to what is the problem?[/img]

Virtualdubmod's mkv support is very outdated - it warns you of this when you load an mkv file.

    Use mkvextract to demux instead.

once i demux with mkvextract, i am now left with two files. one is a video file named Track1.h264 and the other is the audio file named audio.dts

which program would you guys recommend to remux these 2 into an avi?

I wouldn't. H.264 doesn't seem to like being in the avi container. That guide was written back when mkv held Divx/Xvid encoded video, not H.264.

If you want an avi file (and I assume that you need it for standalone playback), use ALLtoAVI to re-encode and convert the mkv file.

I am really hoping to be able to find a way to play the mkv file on my ps3. However, the ps3 does not play mkv so I need to find the best way to convert the mkv to the mp4 format which the ps3 prefers.

So i guess i can either convert the mkv to avi, then convert the avi to mp4.
Or, I could just convert the mkv to mp4 with ps3 video 9.

which would present the best overall quality?

I don't know how well it works (I haven't tried it yet, as I haven't had the need to play any videos on the PS3 (that, and it's my sister's, anyway ) ), but you might be able to try GOTSent.
