    does anyone know of a program or utility that can scan any movie file and report whether it is interlaced or progressive?

    It's called your eyes. There are plenty that can tell you if it was encoded as progressive or interlaced (DGIndex, Bitrate Viewer, ReStream, etc), but the best way to tell if the source is interlaced (has the fine parallel horizontal black lines during movement) is still your eyes. Just play it in a player where you can pause and advance a frame at a time, and where you can turn off any deinterlacing filters so you can see the artifacts. Or open a basic unfiltered AviSynth script in VDub(Mod), scroll to a place with movement and advance a frame at a time.

    I think he was referring to the g-spot screen. There is a small indicator that lights up I/L if the clip has been encoded as interlaced. It's in the Pics/Frames/Fields section. It will also tell you whether it thinks it is Top or Bottom Field First. I can't vouch for it's accuracy.
