    Hi,

I'm now living in Japan and bought a Sharp DV-NC750 DVD/VHS combo. I was informed at the time of buying it that it would play UK region 2 DVD's no problem and took them at thier word. I only got round to testing it yesterday and DVD's i have had sent over from the UK do not work! As i have had the machine for a good few months i no longer have the receipt!!! Is there is a code/hack i can use, or is it a NTSC/PAL thing. I have scoured the internet for any info without result. I am totally clueless about any of this kind of thing so please be gentle, any help would be greatly appreciated, please help me from tearing my hair out!!!

    Thanks, Bri.

Japan is NTSC - UK is PAL=Strike One
I've never heard of a region code hack for a combo=Strike Two
Even if there was a region code hack for this combo...I've never seen a combo that can convert between PAL and NTSC on the fly=Strike Three

I could be wrong but if a Google search came up empty for a region hack...I think it is game over for you.

Although you did give me the answers i needed, dunno about the baseball thang goin' on though??? (if that's what the strike nonsense is indeed)! So what should i do?if UK is pal and Japan is ntsc, is there a DVD player that will play both of these? Again, PLEASE be gentle, completely new and clueless to all of this, thanks

There are many players that can be hacked to "region free" AND that can convert between PAL><NTSC on the fly....but I have serious doubts your combo is one of them.
I have a hacked and true converting Thomson DVD player....and many people here use Oppo brand players....the problem is besides Oppo....most players are "hit or miss" as far as being able to do what you want/need.
There is probably another Thomson that is just one model # away from mine that cannot be hacked...or cannot convert....that is just the way it goes.
Homework prior to the purchase s the key to getting what you need. Most store salesmen are completely full of crap OR don't really know that Region Codes and PAL/NTSC have nothing to do with each other.

Yes, you are right that the "strike" talk is a baseball metaphor. That shows the dangers of using this kind of "Americanism" on an international forum. Perhaps it would be more Brit friendly to say "You've got a bit of a sticky wicket here"

Japan and the UK are both region 2, so technically you should not be having a region problem with the DVD player. What may be happening is that your DVD player may be trying to output PAL TV to a Japanese NTSC TV and this will never work. Look in the setup menu for your DVD player and look for the TV output selection. Usually these default to something like "Multi" or "Any" which is completely wrong for you now that you are in Japan. You MUST change this setting to NTSC. Do that and see if your problem magically goes away.
