    Hey Folks,

Just got a new home computer. Major upgrade. I was doing conversions on a 600mhz and now I have 2 gigs. Heaven. But, it's a Vista machine. So far so good. But I'm having some issues with the camcorder capture on my firewire. I used to use WinDV, but it doesn't seem to work with Vista. The system has Roxio installed and it fires up when I turn on the camcorder, but it locks or restarts the system almost every time. And Windows Movie Maker doesn't even see the Sony Camcorder.

Can anyone suggest a reliable piece of software to capture direct from my camcorder to AVI?

    Thanks!

    Hal

Try this. I was having the same problems with WinDV under Vista until somebody pointed out the DirectX End-User Runtime Update. For some reason, this doesn't show up under Windows Vista Update but seems to be necessary.

Let me know if this works for you because my machine has other updates that may have caused WinDV to start functioning.

  3. If WMM can't see the camcorder, WinDV won't either. Both use the same underlying OS functions to do the capture etc.

Uninstall Roxio and just use Vista's built-in capability.

Roxio, Pinnacle and Nero are notorious for screwing up camcorder detection.

When you turn on the camcorder, choose the appropriate option on the menu that pops up.

Looks like I have a similar problem.

I just got my new Vista PC up and running... my WinDV can't see my Canopus ADVC-100. Windows Movie Maker sees it just fine.

    Any idea why this is?

    Thanks!

Update: Running WinDV in XP compatibility mode did NOT help. WinDV still starts with an "error: no video device found" message.

That's what mine was doing before I ran the DirectX End-User Runtime Update.

Just gave that DirectX runtime update a shot. Unfortunately it didn't help. WMM and DVapp see the ADVC-100 just fine (as they did before) but WinDV still says "device not found."

Any other suggestions? WMM, DVapp, and Scenalyzer all do a lot more than I need a DV program to do. I'd like to keep using WinDV if possible.

    Thanks!

WinDV works on Vista here. It didn't initially. Try to uninstall then reinstall.

I don't think there is an "install" to WinDV... just unzip it to a folder and doubleclick to run the program.

Not really a camcorder per se...

I'm capturing from a DVR into a Canopus ADVC-100, through firewire. This is good enough for WMM and DVapp, but WinDV still says "no device found" at startup.

    Thanks...

I bought a Vista Prem notebook w/Firewire today. I'll try WinDV on it tomorrow and report back.

My ADVC-100 is working fine now on the Core2Duo desktop.
