Im getting loads of drpped frames straight from the start,i was recording in a hall and it was a birthday disco so it was very dark could this be the problem?

  2. Very unlikely.

Does the video play correctly via the viewfinder or a TV?

What are you capturing to? Is the hard drive getting full?

Try capturing with Windows Movie Maker to confirm the behaviour - both programs use exactly the same OS functions to do the capturing.

open up taskmanager - ctr/alt/del - and watch your cpu usage while capturing the tape. if it's hitting 100% you'll lose frames, also watch for other programs taking control-such as anti-virus or anything else that might grab control of the cpu of hard drive.

it's not usually low light causing them, the cam records the same way in any light, it might be a bad tape, though. try to always use the same brand, keep them clean and away from dust and dirt.

Unlikely that dropped frames are related to low light. The sync signals should still be full strength.

If "straight from the start" means the tape was wound to the start of the tape, that might be a problem for the first few seconds. It's a good idea to record black for 30 seconds or so to get past beginning of tape issues and to allow for a few seconds of preroll.

Thanks for that advice on recording a bit of black

Yes the tape was wound to the start of the tape

I tried it again and this time i had no drop frames but i had no audio,i tried it again and still no audio

I had it on Type 2 so i tried it on type 1 and it was fine,no dropped frames and i had audio

But im sure i had allways had it on type 2 and it allways came out with audio

What capture software are you using? If WinDV uncheck the device control box and start the playback manually.
Control requires preroll and at the start of tape you have nothing there.

I once had a situation that needed a new tape and instant recording. Turned out the first few seconds were important so I had to use camcorder controls to capture the first two seconds on the tape frame by frame. There isn't enough time for the camcorder to come to speed in the first few seconds on tape.

Type1 vs. Type2 determines how audio is sent. There is always audio there but your player may not work with type 1.

Yes im using windv to capture

I thought i should of been using type 2 instead of type 1,but why would there be no audio with type 2

If i get dropped frames at the start i will try the playback manually

What is your player/editor software? Check to see if the camcorder is outputting audio though the analog jacks. Maybe you don't have audio.

The camcorder is outputting sound, because you have sound in type 1,ive done a search on google, and it seems some people have the same problem sometimes with windv, but ive not found out the reason why

Not that edDV needs his comments affirmed but this is a bug in the WinDV software.

Merely start the camera FIRST, then press "Capture" in WinDV. You should get sound and no dropped frames. Should be OK with either Type-I or Type-II.

From a couple of years ago, when I contacted the developer about this:

(FWIW, I actually forgot about this recently, and had to re-do a 30-minute transfer. Oops )

    Good luck,
    Jim
