I am trying to convert a .mkv video file and I don't know how to do it. My TMPGEnc DVD authoring program doesn't like that file type it seems and id like to get it to either .avi or .mpeg. Can anybody give me any suggestions?

You first say that there are no subtitles using convertx and then that are subtitles but they are too low? You can move the subtitles higher in converxtodvd, under settings->subtitles and Text subtitles rendering settings change the Margin vertical value.

    thanks baldrick!

the case in which the subtitles are too low was on my avi files not on mkv.. (thanks for the guide!)

about the subtitles who disappeared.. i finally solved it! here's how:

1.) I extracted the subtitle file using MKVExtractGUI
2.) Loaded in Subtitle Workshop and saved it in srt format (previous format = ass)
3.) Converted the mkv to mpg/avi using TMPGenc
4.) Merged the new file with the new corresponding subtitle using AutoGK
5.) Made it into a DVD using ConvertXtoDVD

    that's it!!

after weeks of finding ways..finally, I made it.. thanks to this forum!!

Question, I already adjusted the settings so that the subtitles will be a bit higher.. but it doesn't work on permanent subs..do I have to subripped it, then the usual process?

I don't know of any program that converts mkv files and correctly detects the subs inside the mkv container and uses them. Use MKVExtract the gets the subs out, convert them to SRT format, and ConvertXtoDVD or FAVC can turn them into switchable DVD subs correctly.

What do you need AutoGK for ? If your target format is DVD, don't throw a generation of quality away converting to Divx first. Use ConvertXtoDVD or FAVC with the original MKV file and the srt subs and go straight to DVD.

I'm just trying to get it to Xvid, for I am putting it on my ipod. they subs are large enough to read, so don't fret. However I can't get the subs to display properly

New error with a different project:

I have the Mkv and the subs in both .ass and in .srt, converting to DVD with my new copy of ConvertXtoDVD. When I watch the preview window, the subs do not show up. Why? It is also saying in a gold colored box in the log: error while decoding stream #0.0. Also, if I do get this to work, how do I make sure that the subs will come up, since I do not know how to make a menu regarding enabling subtitles from the DVD player.

On the Subtitles tab under preferences/settings there is a tick box to turn on the default subtitle automatically. Of course, you can just use the subtitle button on your remote as well.

Or you convert mkv to avi using TMPGenc then merge with the subtitles and the avi file using AutoGK..

I have experienced that problem before..

Anyone knows what is going on?

Are you working in an administrator account on your PC ?
Are you writing to a disc that has enough space ?
