    Hi,

I just want to make sure I am using this card to the best of it's ability. I am a TWC HD digital subscriber with box SA 8300HD. With my HVR-1600 I am able to sucessfully tune my basic and standard cable channel offerings, and various QAM channels (including local HD and a variety of music channels).

As I understand it, there is no way for my HVR-1600 to tune any of the digital channel offerings I subscribe to and can receive with my SA 8300HD. Is this correct?

I guess my wishlist would include this card, or any card as being digital cable ready. As I pay for this content, and can receive it on my SA 8300HD, I feel I should be able to tune it in somehow on my PC as well. I guess I am dreaming?

  3. The other channels are transmitted via QAM but they are encrypted. The only way to view them is with a device with a CableCARD:

You could watch (and record) the encrypted channels by running s-video from your cable box to the HVR 1600. It will only be standard def though. The industry works very hard to make it difficult for you to record unencrypted HD video.

So far, the powers that be have resisted Cablecard for PC tuners. Those pushing for this to happen are Microsoft and the HTPC (home theater PC) manufacturers. Last I heard, Comcast and Time Warner countered by offering PC remote control of their cable boxes since they still want the $7-10/mo box/remote rent. The FCC hasn't weighed in on this yet except to require Cablecard support for digital TV sets. The same issue extends to VCRs and DVD recorders.

I live in Irvine and there are two digital public stations that use MPEG2. However, using avi.net I manage to easily convert the regular digital channel but don't have any luck converting the HDTV! This conversion is to make the huge files managable for my resonnal PVR (Creative Zen). Would you have any suggestion?

    Thanks, Nader
