Windows Media Player plays DVD without sound

I am using Windows XP Professional SP2. While I am playing DVD using VLC Media Player, it is playing the DVD with no problem but the same cannot be played using Windows Media Player. The Media Player only showing the pictures but no sound. Anybody faced such problem? How to Fix it?

My sound device is AC97 (onboard).

have you got wmp 10 or 11?
or install power dvd, this should fix it
probly just havnt got dvd codecs installed

It may have AC3 audio and you don't have that codec installed. VLC has it's own codecs, so it plays most anything. You could drop one of the VOB files into Gspot 2.70 and it will tell you what codecs you need to play the audio. AC3 Filter should work for decoding if that's what you're missing.

Yes, there was no Media Player compatible mpeg2 decoder installed in my system, which caused the problem. I have installed a GNU GPL supported mpeg2 decoder which is Media Player compatible, which solved the problem.

VLC was previously installed in my Windows XP system. Now after comparing Windows Media Player and VLC, I feel that VLC is giving me better quality than Windows Media Player while playing the DVD.

Which is why VLC is a fave of many here, including myself.....
