  1. Are there any new projects being worked on to speed up the process of converting? My processor is at 500mhz...that's probably slowing it...but I'm sure a P4 runs slow, too.

I know I sound like a bitch and all..but it seems a bit much. I don't see how anyone does this for full movies!

  3. Actually your processor is slowing you down A LOT!!! Even a 1 gig athlon would give you better times. With my old 1.2 gig Athlon I could encode a 90min movie in 2.5 hours using noise reduction filters. As for a P4 it would make it possible to convert in ALMOST real-time (depending on filters etc.) I use TMPGenc with dual 700/1M Xeons and I can convert in real-tme with a full array of filters. The software end is fine really it's a matter of having the hardware to back it up.

  4. I agree with you and pyrosecht. Conversion can be a real pain. It's a matter of setting up a system that works for you and going with it.

I also have a 500 intel III and I have a Amd 999. There is a very noticeable difference in speed of encoding between the two. My main box is a 500 and can take up to 30 hours to encode a 720x480 where as my laptop takes half that time which has the amd.

It is also like resnullius is wondering. What software are you using and what are you hoping to accomplish? In my case I do encoding for DVD's which will naturally take longer because of the size and methods.

  5. I'm using TMPG for converting everything to mpeg(VCD). It takes a 20min vid about 2.5 hours. But it seems to differ. I had one 20min. vid that was trying to take 4hrs..but I cancelled that one.

Is it possible to replace a processor? It seems like it would be, but I've never seen a processor for sail in the paper or anything.

I use tmpgenc also and from my experience with it the time seems to be relative to the content of the video. It definitely is relative to settings.

As to your question of processors. Yes you can upgrade but not by enough to make it worth your while. Your motherboard probably wouldn't handle the demands of a new processor.

I've decided to build my own computor. I found a place on the web that has the main components that I need and will cost about 1/2 of what it would be to purchase a new box with stuff I don't want or need.

I wouldn't recommend this approach if you are new to the computer scene tho. You would be "technical support"

  7. For your reference, I have AMD XP 1600+, encoding SVCD with TmpEngc a file of 60 minutes will take about 60 minutes CBR or 2 hours 2-pass VBR

  8. i'd like to hear what your settings are cause i encode 45min vcd in 60 min and i,m running on a 700mhz.... so there should'nt be that much difference what you can do is get video pack 5.... the compression does'nt look great on your computer but it's good on a tv.... and it's a bit faster.
